Prof. Dr. Jana Zaumseil is awarded the Alfried-Krupp Sponsorship Award 2010

Prof. Dr. Jana Zaumseil, professor of nanoelectronics at the Engineering of Advanced Materials (EAM) Cluster of Excellence at the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU), received the 2010 sponsorship award for young university lecturers from the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation. The award entails funding totalling 1 million euros over a period of five years.

“We are delighted with Prof. Zaumseil’s award”, said Prof. Wolfgang Peukert, the coordinator of the Cluster of Excellence. “The sponsorship is proof that, within the framework of the Cluster, we are succeeding in attracting the best researchers to Erlangen. Her expertise and the additional funding from the sponsorship award will generate added impetus for nanoelectronics research at FAU in the future.” During her PhD Prof. Zaumseil worked on topical areas in the field of organic electronics. Her work in Erlangen is primarily concerned with the synthesis of and research into innovative nanomaterials, which depending on their size can only absorb and emit light of specific wavelengths. The aim is to understand how these processes can be influenced and controlled so that they can be used for optoelectronic components.

Born in Jena in 1977, Jana Zaumseil studied at the University of Leipzig and graduated in chemistry. After a year-long research internship at the renowned Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill (USA) she went on to do her PhD in Cambridge (UK). She then spent two years researching at the Center for Nanoscale Materials at the Argonne National Laboratory (USA). In October 2009, Jana Zaumseil was appointed W2 Professor for Nanoelectronics in the Cluster of Excellence. This appointment was connected to the Cluster’s “EAM Award” which was also endowed with 750,000 euros. Even as a student she received numerous awards and scholarships in Germany, England and the USA.
