The University Council accepts President Grüske’s proposal

A change on the Friedrich Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU) management board: Prof. Dr. Joachim Hornegger succeeds Prof. Dr. Hans-Peter Steinrück as Vice President. From 1.10.2011 he will join the two current Vice Presidents, Prof. Johanna Haberer and Prof. Dr. Christoph Korbmacher, and the University Chancellor Thomas A. H. Schöck as a member of the university’s management under the leadership of President Prof. Dr. Karl-Dieter Grüske. The University Council unanimously backed Prof. Grüske’s proposal at the election held on 16 June. The new Vice President will assume his functions on 1.10.2011 and remain in office until 30.3.2013.

Professor Hornegger’s responsibilities will focus on research and young academics. He succeeds Prof. Dr. Hans-Peter Steinrück who, after almost six years as a member of the university’s management, will once again concentrate exclusively on his academic work. Steinrück, an internationally acclaimed and highly visible scientist, has been head of the FAU’s Department for Physical Chemistry II since 1998. The President thanked Prof. Steinrück warmly for his dedication: “Through his work as Vice President for Research and Young Academics, Prof. Steinrück moved the University forward greatly. His contribution cannot be praised highly enough; at the upcoming official handover in October I will go into greater detail.”

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Joachim Hornegger studied Computer Science at the FAU and graduated in 1996 from the Department for Pattern Recognition after submitting a work on Statistical Object Modelling and Recognition. After graduating, he spent time researching at different institutions, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In 1997/98 he was a visiting researcher and lecturer at the Stanford University Computer Science Department. Thereafter he became a development engineer for Siemens Medical Solutions. In 2001 he took over management of the company’s Medical Image Processing Department and in 2003 overall responsibility for Image Systems Development. In addition to his work in the private sector, Hornegger was a visiting lecturer at Erlangen-Nuremberg, Eichstätt-Ingolstadt and Mannheim universities.

In 2003 Prof. Hornegger took up a post as lecturer in Medical Image Processing at the FAU and since 2005 he has been Chair of the Department for Pattern Recognition and number two in the FAU’s Faculty of Medicine. Hornegger’s research essentially focuses on medical image and signal processing. Since 2010 he has been the spokesperson for the newly established Central Institute for Medical Technology (ZiMT).
