FAU researchers some of the most frequently cited in Germany

One way of assessing academic excellence is according to how often university publications are cited. This is the basis of the annual CWTS Leiden Ranking of top universities. FAU has good reason to be proud of its placement this year, as it is number 11 in Germany of the universities with a significant number of publications that are among the top ten percent of the most frequently cited publications – ahead of universities such as RWTH Aachen, HU Berlin and TU Dresden.

At the subject level, the results for mathematics and computer science at FAU, which were evaluated together, are even better: these disciplines are ranked number four when it comes to the proportion of publications among the most frequently cited ten percent. A particular success for FAU is that its has moved up twelve places in the ranking in comparison to last year.

FAU also holds its own with regard to other criteria, demonstrated by a remarkable sixth place in Germany for the total number of publications. In the rankings of individual subjects the natural sciences and engineering did particularly well with a fantastic fourth place.

FAU publications that result from collaboration with partners in industry are cited particularly frequently. The University came in fourth place among German universities in this category. Mathematics and computer science were the best of the individual subjects here, achieving first place in Germany. In terms of publications that are produced in collaboration with other research institutions, life and earth sciences were particularly successful, ranking at fifth place nationally.

The CWTS Leiden Ranking is published once a year by the Centre for Science and Technology Studies at Leiden University (Netherlands) and compares 750 of the world’s top universities.
