FAU Vice President for International Affairs signs agreements with two Chinese universities

Making and maintaining international contacts is becoming increasingly important in our globalised world, and universities are no exception to this. For this reason, Bernd Sibler, state secretary at the Bavarian State Ministry of Education, Science and the Arts, went on a delegation visit to China to find out about current developments in higher education and research. One of those accompanying him on this visit was FAU Vice President for International Affairs, Prof. Dr. Günter Leugering, who used the opportunity to make new contacts and strengthen existing ones.

Working together in teaching and research

During the two-week trip, Prof. Leugering strengthened FAU’s relationship with two Chinese universities in particular. With an agreement with the South University of Science and Technology of China (SUSTC) in Shenzhen – a city twinned with Erlangen, Nuremberg and Fürth – FAU has gained a new official partner. FAU’s Department of Chemistry and Pharmacy has already established a student exchange with SUSTC and the two universities now aim to collaborate in teaching and research in the future.

Establishing a research centre

Prof. Leugering signed an agreement with the East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST) in Shanghai with the specific goal of establishing a joint polymer research centre. ECUST has been collaborating with FAU’s Chair of Polymer Technology for many years and by establishing a polymer research centre together the universities aim to intensify their exchange of students and researchers. A long-term goal of this collaboration is to use the research projects and the resulting practical results to initiate collaborations between German and Chinese industry.
