FAU has performed excellently in the recently published Shanghai subject ranking: the natural sciences appear in the top 100 in the world for the first time at number 92, while medicine has gone up by 80 places compared to last year and now ranks at number 111.

In the Shanghai subject ranking (officially called the Academic Ranking of World Universities by Broad Subject Fields), which is published on an annual basis, Shanghai Jiao Tong University compares 1200 universities from around the globe in various subject groups. FAU has been particularly successful this year, ranking among the top 100 universities in the world (rank 92) for the first time and at number 7 in Germany for natural sciences. The natural sciences were rated particularly highly for the indicator ‘highly cited researchers’, in joint second place in the national comparison alongside RWTH Aachen University and the University of Heidelberg. In the international comparison they rank at number 45.

FAU’s greatest improvement was in the field of medicine. The University was ranked at 191 internationally for these subjects in 2015 and has gone up 80 places to number 111. In the national comparison medicine moved up from 15th last year to 6th this year. It was particularly successful in the indicator ‘TOP’, which measures the percentage of papers published in the top 20 percent of journals in the field. Medicine is in second place nationally and 72nd internationally for this indicator.

FAU is ranked at number 3 in Germany and number 108 in the world for engineering. FAU’s engineers performed especially well in terms of the number of highly cited researchers, coming in at joint second in Germany in this category alongside TU Dresden.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities by Broad Subject Fields has been published on an annual basis by Shanghai Jiao Tong University since 2007. Subjects are grouped into the categories Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Engineering and Computer Sciences, Clinical Medicine and Pharmacy, Life and Agricultural Sciences, and Social Sciences.
