Invitation to the 3rd Run Against Cancer on 16 October 2016 – secure your place on the starting line now

Exercising and doing good – not just for oneself, but also for cancer patients. The nutritional team at the Department of Medicine 1 – Gastroenterology, Pneumology and Endocrinology at Universitätsklinikum Erlangen, the Comprehensive Cancer Center Erlangen EMN and the Association for Nutrition and Exercise for Cancer Patients (Verein Ernährung und Sport bei Krebs) have extended an invitation to join them for a special event. On Sunday, 16 October 2016, the third Run Against Cancer will be held in the Schlossgarten in Erlangen. Around 1700 runners are expected to participate; they will collect donations for cancer research and prevention for each lap which they complete. Registration is open online until Sunday, 9 October 2016.

Organisers Prof. Dr. Yurdagül Zopf, Dr. Hans Joachim Herrmann and Prof. Dr. Jürgen Siebler (all from Department of Medicine 1) and Helmut Müller and John Stackmann (from SG Siemens Erlangen) happily agree: ‘The first benefit events were a huge success and we have already received numerous registrations for this year. We are thrilled to see that so many people support our efforts and that there are so many children who enjoy running!’ Over 20,000 euros were raised in the charity runs in the past two years. The money is intended for research projects and awareness-raising activities on nutrition and sport, as well as sports therapy and kinesiotherapy programmes for cancer patients, which benefit local citizens in the region.

Sports, exercise and a healthy diet can do more than just reduce cancer risks: they can also have a decisive influence on treatment and prognosis after receiving cancer therapy. The organisers of the Run Against Cancer hope to send a message about the significance of exercise and nutrition in the prevention and treatment of cancer. The sponsor of the event is Prof. Dr. Joachim Hornegger, President of FAU.
