University Council: A new chairperson and a new member

Dr. Roland Busch to take over from Prof. Pfeilschifter – Rector of KU Leuven new to the team

In its meeting on 13 December 2019, the FAU University Council unanimously appointed Dr. Roland Busch to the position of chairperson. The FAU University Council also has a new external member: Professor Dr. Luc Sels, rector of KU Leuven, has been appointed to the highest decision-making body of FAU by the State Minister for Science and the Arts. His term of office ends in 2023.

Dr. Roland Busch is taking over from Dr. Josef M. Pfeilschifter, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Goethe University Frankfurt, who has to leave the University Council after having completed the maximum legal term of office. Dr. Roland Busch studied Physics both at FAU and at Grenoble University. In 1994 he joined Siemens AG (Central Division for Research and Development) as a project manager before switching to Automobile Technology – Strategic Planning at the Regensburg site in 1995. Dr. Roland Busch joined the Board of Siemens AG in 2011. Dr. Busch is eminently suitable for the post of advisor on the natural sciences and engineering at FAU as a result of the varied roles he has played in a major international company.

FAU is pleased to welcome Prof. Sels, a prominent scientist. He brings his experience as rector of KU Leuven, the only university ranked higher than FAU in the European Reuters innovation ranking. Prof. Sels launched his academic career by studying sociology at KU Leuven, where he then completed a doctoral degree in 1995. After working as an assistant professor at the Faculty of Economics and Business at KU Leuven from 1996 to 2004, he was appointed Professor of Work and Organisation Studies and was Dean of the Faculty from 2009 to 2017.

With Prof. Dr. Luc Sels, FAU is intensifying its networking with high-ranking international universities and benefits from his experience as head of Europe’s most innovative university.

FAU’s University Council

The University Council of FAU consists of the senators plus a total of ten senior figures from industry, research and society:

The Council also includes six professors, one representative of research staff, one representative of administrative staff and two students who all have voting rights. The University’s women’s representative and the doctoral candidates’ representative are included in the Council as advisory members. The President, the four vice presidents and the Chancellor also attend the meetings but are not entitled to vote.
