Discussing current political and social issues with delegates from other countries at the headquarters of the UN and making decisions about draft resolutions is usually reserved for high-ranking diplomats. At the National Model United Nations (NMUN), students from all over the world take on the role of the negotiators. FAU’s FAUMUN delegation also takes part every year. Students can apply to take part until 1 August 2020.

What is FAUMUN all about?

How does the UN work? How do diplomats behave? How do states solve current crises? FAUMUN is just the right project for those interested in finding answers to these questions. The project enables students to take on the role of diplomats and draw up solutions for current topics from the standpoint of a certain country. The entire winter semester is used to prepare for the world’s largest MUN conference in New York, the NMUN, that takes place at the end of March with around 5000 students from all over the world. The preparation comprises training for public speaking, negotiation training, gaining more in-depth knowledge about the workings of the UN and current topics, as well as several practice sessions in Erlangen, Munich and Nuremberg. A preparatory week in Berlin enables students to get to know real diplomats and provides some insights into the country the students will be representing.

The project takes place in English and is interdisciplinary. Some prerequisites are therefore good English language skills, enrolment in an FAU degree programme, and an interest in international relations. Previous knowledge about the UN is not necessary.
