FAU professor elected as Chair of the Scientific Commission

Professor Anja Boßerhoff, Chair of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine at FAU’s Institute of Biochemistry was elected as the new Chair of the Scientific Commission during the winter session of the German Council of Science and Humanities.

Professor Boßerhoff has held the Chair of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine at FAU since October 2014. Her research at FAU focuses on the molecular mechanisms of malignant melanoma.

She has been a member of the German Council of Science and Humanities since 2017 and her role involves working with other members to advise the federal and state governments on developments in science, humanities and higher education. Professor Boßerhoff was elected as the Chair of the Scientific Commission in January. Like all offices held in the German Council of Science and Humanities, the Chair is re-elected each year.

Although Professor Boßerhoff’s term has started differently to previous years due to the coronavirus pandemic, the FAU scientist is nevertheless looking forward to new challenges.

‘The task is particularly exciting because it has a different focus compared to what scientists normally do,’ says Anja Boßerhoff. Her work on the Council also gives her deep insights into the world of science policy. ‘Although there is a great deal of work involved, it is an honour and a privilege to be elected to this position,’ says the new Chair.

As Chair of the Scientific Commission, Professor Boßerhoff will also be able to help decide which topics the German Council of Science and Humanities will address and maintain contacts with other domestic and foreign scientific institutions and science councils. Professor Boßerhoff is particularly looking forward to also chairing the Research Committee as part of her new role, as this is where the central issues of scientific work are dealt with.

The German Council of Science and Humanities is one of the most influential scientific advisory councils in Germany. It was established to ensure that Germany remains competitive at the national and European level. The members of the German Council of Science and Humanities submit recommendations and evaluations on the structure, performance, development and funding of academic institutions. They also assess structural aspects of research and teaching as well as the planning, evaluation and management of departments and academic subjects. The German Council of Science and Humanities consists of scientists, representatives of the public and political representatives from the state and federal governments.
