Why do we still need food banks in Europe?

Europe is one of the richest regions in the world. And yet over 96 million people in the EU are at risk of poverty or social exclusion. Food banks collect surplus food and distribute it to people who cannot afford nutritious food on their own. But how is it that some people in one of the richest regions on the planet need to rely on food banks? In an article on the Debating Europe website FAU Professor Dr. Sabine Pfeiffer, Chair of Sociology (Technology – Labour – Society), explains which steps could be taken to fight food poverty in Europe.
