Hermann Emil Fischer
Hermann Emil Fischer (1852–1919)
He received many awards for his outstanding research on glucose, carbohydrates, enzymes, proteins and purines. The highlight of his career was without a doubt when he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1902 in recognition of his work on sugar and purine synthesis.
Fischer is regarded as the father of classical organic chemistry. It is thanks to Fischer that we have the lock and key model, the sleeping pill (Veronal ®), the Fischer projection and an understanding of the structure of glucose.
