FAU’s Antique and Classical Collection I
The Institute of Archaeology owns a collection of plaster casts and a large range of original antique artefacts. Established in 1853, this collection now forms Bavaria’s third largest museum of classical antiquity. The collection began the long tradition in the subject of classical archaeology in Erlangen, which was established a quarter of a century after the collection was set up.
It originally contained just 15 casts of classical sculptures from Greek and Roman Antiquity. The collection was intended to support the University’s students’ basic classical education as it enabled a hands-on approach. The objects are still a valuable resource for teaching and the collection continues to be expanded.
A small model workshop was recently opened at the collection for modelling individual buildings and entire sites from Antiquity, such as the Forum Romanum. Another unique aspect of the collection is its historical archive with over 20,000 images dating from the early part of photography’s history which show antique remains in conditions that have since been lost forever. It can be viewed online in AERIA (Antikensammlung ERlangen Internet Archive).
