The first original antique artefacts were added to the Antique and Classical Collection by Heinrich Bulle, Chair of Archaeology, in 1904. This new addition complemented the existing collection of plaster casts. Today the casts and original artefacts can be viewed by the public during the regular opening hours of the museum known as the Antique and Classical Collection. The majority of objects in the original collection date from Mycenaean Greece, primarily from the period between the sixth and fifth centuries BC. Some of these works are the only ones of their kinds in the world and are named after the city and the University, such the Erlanger Dreifuß, the Erlanger Becher, and the Schale des Erlanger
Malers.

The collection also includes an impressive selection of antique engraved gemstones and antique coins. Due to ethical considerations the collection is no longer being expanded. Nevertheless, research involving the artefacts is still constantly leading to new discoveries that are presented to the public once a year in a special exhibition.
