The first time the name of the University is mentioned, the full German name, including the abbreviation FAU, should be used: ‘Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU)’.

In the rest of the text, the following variations may be used:

  • FAU

  • University of Erlangen-Nürnberg
  • Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg

Please note that the definite article is not used with the University’s name in English, i.e. ‘at FAU’ (no ‘the’).

Other variations

Please only use the variations given above and do not use any alternative variations.

Stating affiliation in publications

Please follow the FAU affiliation guidelines. In particular, note the following:

‘Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU)’ is the preferred variation. ‘Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU)’ may also be used.

If there is a character limit, the full name of the University should still be used where possible to ensure that the affiliation is clear.
