Start-up funding

Support for young entrepreneurs

Aspiring young entrepreneurs at universities may be eligible for financial support from special funding programmes run by the Bavarian state government and the Federal government even before they actually found their company.

Applications for these programmes are submitted via the FAU Start-Up Service (wtt), which helps the entrepreneurs draft their application in advance (usually in the form of a business plan). Please be sure to plan sufficient time (approx. two months) to increase your chances of success.

The EXIST Business Start-up Grant is a funding programme running for a maximum of one year before and during/shortly after the foundation of the company. It reduces personal financial risks in the period before the company is launched. It allows potential business owners to focus entirely on developing a promising business plan. The programme also focuses on encouraging the development of entrepreneurial skills.

Application deadline:

Applications can be submitted at any time.

Who is eligible for funding? What is funded? How does the funding work?

Details on the funding are available on the EXIST website under the heading Conditions (German).

A prerequisite for funding is that you have a consultation at FAU’s Start-Up Service (wtt). The grant supports entrepreneurs from universities and non-university research institutions who would like to turn their idea for a new business into a business plan. The planned start-ups should be technologically innovative projects with good commercial prospects for success.

Applications have to be submitted via the University and applicants must have had at least one consultation. Please contact wtt approximately two months in advance.

EXIST Transfer of Research is a two-phased funding programme (each phase lasting up to 18 months) for outstanding research-based start-up projects involving expensive and high-risk development work and for further development work needed until the product reaches market maturity and business can be started. The aim is to increase the number of particularly ambitious technology-oriented start-ups originating from universities and research institutions. EXIST Transfer of Research is an extension of the EXIST business start-up grant aimed at a wider target group, providing measures specifically tailored to promote excellence in high-tech start-ups. EXIST Transfer of Research has two funding phases.

Application deadlines:

Applications can be submitted between 1 and 31 January and between 1 to 31 July every year.

A funding programme lasting either six or twelve months covering the period leading up to and during the launch of a company aimed at members of the university submitting the application. It provides a grant and additional resources to the university, reducing personal financial risk in the period before the launch of the company. An extension of a further six months is possible in exceptional cases.

Application deadlines:

Applications can be submitted once to twice a year. The current deadlines are listed at http://www.fluegge-bayern.de/bewerbung.

Who is eligible for funding? What is funded? How does the funding work?

Details of funding and application documents are available at www.fluegge-bayern.de.

A prerequisite for funding is that you have a consultation at FAU’s Start-Up Service (wtt). The programme encourages preparations for innovative start-ups, in particular start-up projects which were unable to be completed from a technological point of view whilst receiving EXIST funding or if an application for an Exist business start-up grant was rejected in spite of it being a technologically innovative project. University staff are only eligible if they work part-time, at most 50% of a full-time contract.

The application must be submitted via the university and a consultation is a requirement. Please contact wtt as soon as possible.
