Energie Campus Nürnberg

Sustainable energy research

Energie Campus Nürnberg (EnCN) is committed to putting into practice the vision of a sustainable energy industry based on renewable energies. EnCN is a research platform for the development and presentation of a closed-loop renewable energy chain. In particular, this includes combining power generation from renewable energy sources, energy storage and intelligent in-feeds with efficient use and exploitation. These developments are accompanied by system engineering research, acceptance research, simulation and design. To this end, EnCN systematically develops expertise within the regional research sector and industry with the aim of making Bavaria and Germany leaders in selected fields of energy research.

FAU is one of the founding members of EnCN and one of its most important collaborators. Seven of the ten research projects which are run by EnCN are co-ordinated by FAU researchers. Other members of EnCN are Technische Hochschule Nürnberg Georg Simon Ohm, the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS, the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Systems and Device Technology IISB, the Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics IBP and ZAE Bayern. It is also supported by the city of Nuremberg, Nuremberg Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Handwerkskammer für Mittelfranken in Nürnberg (Middle Franconia chamber of commerce). The Bavarian state government provided 50 million euros in funding for the expansion of Energie Campus Nürnberg as part of its initiative ‘Strukurprogamm Nürnberg/Fürth’. This funding is to be used over a period of 5 years.
