Kick-off in Nuremberg

North Bavaria’s largest university and North Bavaria’s largest soccer club kick off an exciting new collaboration combining science, research and sport. FAU and 1. FC Nürnberg (FCN) have signed an extensive cooperation agreement. As Prof. Dr. Joachim Hornegger, FAU President, says: “We have been in close contact with the Club for years now and are very much looking forward to benefiting even more from our mutual synergies in future. Our students in particular will benefit from the exciting opportunities offered by our new cooperation.”

As part of the cooperation, FAU and FCN will offer a cooperative degree program for four students. “In my opinion, the fusion of academic studies at FAU and practical experience of the day to day running of a Bundesliga club is a winning combination. We’re looking forward to hearing from dedicated and enthusiastic applicants,” explains Niels Rossow, commercial director at FCN, adding “We want to improve the life of people in the region and promote the Club at the same time. With over 38,000 students and more than 6,500 members of staff, FAU is a powerful community of innovative young minds. Together, we would like to explore the possibilities for groundbreaking cooperation projects in the future.”

In addition, all students will be offered the option of taking part in a practical seminar led by Prof. Dr. Sebastian Junge from the School of Business, Economics and Society at FAU. In this seminar, students will learn how they can help the Club tackle strategic challenges. Students from any other discipline will also be able to put the knowledge acquired at FAU into practice during placements and as student trainees at the Club. According to Dieter Hecking, sport director at 1. FC Nürnberg, “students will be given an insight into the sporting strategies pursued by FCN and our youth academy. The event launching the first club seminar at FAU in our home team’s locker room in the Max Morlock Stadium on the same day as our Club’s anniversary will be the ideal kick-off for this special collaboration.”

That apart, FAU and FCN will also work hand in hand to tackle another topic of the greatest importance for our future: sustainability. Prof. Dr. Matthias Fifka, FAU officer for sustainability and a member of the supervisory board at FCN, is available to advise the Club in a committee convened in January with the aim of drawing up and implementing a sustainability strategy.
