Engineering for smart cities

The Nuremberg Campus of Technology (NCT) run by FAU and Technische Hochschule Nürnberg Georg Simon Ohm (THN) aims to take on the technical challenges and make use of the opportunities which result from increasing demand for sustainability and new safety threats which cities will be faced with in the future as they change to new energy systems.

Based on the research priority ‘Engineering for Smart Cities’, the Nuremberg Campus of Technology (NCT) has established the following five fields of research which will be represented by five chairs at FAU, five professors at THN and additional working groups at the two institutions: automation technology (resource-efficient production), energy and storage technology, intelligent transport planning (urban technologies), construction and the environment (environment, raw materials, recycling), and safety technology. On the basis of the research results and approaches used by FAU’s Faculty of Engineering and THN’s existing expertise, partnerships will be set up with other research institutions in the region to work together to create new fields in engineering research and new teaching methods.

With the concept ‘Engineering for Smart Cities’ the NCT is contributing to research in the areas which have been identified by the Nuremberg Metropolitan Area as its areas of expertise, supporting its status as a strong location for industry, and committing itself to the research priorities of companies in the region. The particular significance of cities as a place to live is highlighted by the fact that, as of the beginning of the 21st century, more than half of the world’s population now live in cities. This means that urban technologies and green development present particular opportunities and challenges for research and industry which promise to allow us to gain new knowledge and enter future markets.
