Going abroad
Taking the first step towards spending time studying abroad is often very hard when faced with the wide range of options available to you. In order to make it easier for you to get started, we have gathered some basic questions you should consider beforehand. You can then start to make specific plans for your stay abroad.
WHAT opportunities do I have?
First of all, you should consider how much time you want to spend abroad and what you hope to achieve during your time there. Usually, the options can be split into studying or completing an internship.
WHERE would I like to go?
Your planning largely hinges on where you intend to spend your time abroad. Decisive factors when deciding where to go are language skills, the safety of the country in question and your own personal interest in the culture of the host country. In addition, if you are considering spending time abroad as part of your studies it is definitely worth considering which universities have a partnership with FAU, as they usually offer a simplified admissions procedure, lower tuition fees and other advantages.
The options for exchange programs for study stays abroad can be roughly split into the regions Europe and overseas. Our interactive world map offers a good overview of all partnerships and options for exchanges available at FAU.
Partnerships are less important if you intend going abroad as a free mover or to complete an internship. On the one hand, you have more flexibility in the choice of country, but on the other, you will need to spend more time searching for a suitable place.
HOW can I finance my stay abroad?
There are several options for financing your stay abroad. Some exchange programs are automatically linked to funding, for others you can apply for a scholarship to cover travel expenses or the cost of living. Generally speaking, you should still make sure that you have sufficient financial backing even if you do have a scholarship, as scholarships are often only paid once you have actually started your time abroad.
WHOM can I contact if I have any further questions?
Please make sure you first have a clear idea of the opportunities available to you before you approach the relevant offices for a consultation. The Central Office for International Affairs does not offer detailed initial consultations, as all information on stays abroad is available directly on these websites. When you have an initial idea about where you would like to go, you should usually first ask your department or faculty about which exchange programs are available and whether your preferred destination is included.
If you are uncertain as to whom you can contact, you will find a short overview of the points of contact available in the section called International Service.
