Program overview
What is the degree program about?
Classical archeology, Christian archeology, and prehistory and protohistory (prehistoric archeology) are the three specializations which students of this degree program can choose from and there is also an opportunity to take modules from neighboring disciplines. Over the course of two years (four semesters), you will build on and strengthen the practical and theoretical knowledge from your previous studies. A Master’s degree enables you to carry out independent academic research in your subject(s) and opens up possibilities for further qualifications, such as a doctoral degree.
The Institute of Classical Archeology and the Institute of Prehistory and Early History have extensive collections – some of the largest of their kind in Germany – which allow students to work with large amounts of original material. A very good ratio of lecturers to students enables quick and comprehensive learning. FAU is also the only university in Bavaria with a professor specializing in the palaeolithic period. Students also have the opportunity to learn how to use non-invasive prospecting methods (magnetometer prospecting) and process the results using geographic information systems.
- 1st to 3rd semester (total of 30 ECTS credits per semester): One module (consisting of a lecture and seminar) from the student’s specialization and one module from another area per semester, as well as a practical module with tutorials, excursions, placements or language courses.
- 4th semester (total of 30 ECTS credits): Master’s thesis on a topic from the student’s specialization

Content related master requirements
This degree program is open to all German and international applicants with a Bachelor’s degree in archeology. Degrees in related subjects are also recognized, particularly those in classical archeology, Christian archeology, prehistory or protohistory and early history (prehistoric archeology), the archeology of Roman provinces, or medieval archeology, provided at least 60 ECTS credits were obtained in these subjects.
- Applicants require a completed Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in archeological sciences. Degrees in related subjects are also recognized, particular those in classical archeology, Christian archeology, prehistory or pre- and early history, the archeology of provinces, or medieval archeology, providing that at least 60 ECTS credits were obtained in these subjects.
- Applicants with a minimum grade of “gut” (good – 2.5) in their previous degree qualify for admission; applicants with an average grade of 2.51 to 3.00 will be required to attend an individual admission interview.
