Digitalization – the backbone of numerous objectives

At FAU, digitalization means

… actively shaping the changes to our lives and work brought about by digitalization with people and for people at FAU and exploiting the resulting potential for learning, researching and working for the benefit of all members at FAU. (FAU Development Plan)

Digitalization at FAU

The FAU campus is a place where members can meet, interact and develop their potential, in both the physical and virtual worlds. The physical campus and the digital campus merge seamlessly. Together, they are characterized by the following three key areas:

  • More flexible teaching – hybrid, customizable and innovative.
  • Research networks with easily accessible resources
  • Efficient, service-oriented and user-centered administration

Digitalization is the backbone for many objectives detailed in the FAU Development Plan, and has an impact on a number of areas. These range from our strategic fields of action (P E R O) to cross-sectional topics such as equal opportunities, sustainability and internationalization.

Specific measures include basing actions on international standards, establishing IT management processes, encouraging the strategic development of IT capabilities and closing investment gaps. We regularly review our own IT real net output ratio and the possibility of forming a network with other institutions in order to keep expenses in check.

CIO

The Chief Information Officer (CIO) at FAU is responsible for the strategic coordination of information and communications technology throughout the university. The CIO is the speaker of the CIO Committee and represents the CIO Committee to the Executive Board of the University and external organizations.

CISO

FAU’s Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) is responsible for ensuring and continuously improving information security at FAU. Information security addresses the confidentiality, availability and integrity of technical and non-technical systems on various levels. Prof. Tielemann is responsible for preventing damage, minimizing risk and protecting against hazards at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg.
