Blumenau-Niesel-Stiftung

The Blumenau-Niesel Foundation, based in Erlangen with an office in Berlin, is committed to promoting science and research and strengthening international cooperation with a particular focus on Latin America and Brazil. In 1850, FAU alumnus Dr. Hermann Bruno Otto Blumenau founded the settlement on the river Itajaí that would later bear his name: Blumenau in the state of Santa Catarina, southern Brazil. Today, the city has approximately 360,000 inhabitants and is the most well-known settlement with German origins in Brazil, enjoying a high reputation as a exhibition, media and economic center. Founded in 2023, the Blumenau-Niesel Foundation already has an extensive network in Germany and Brazil, which is used to implement research projects and encourage collaboration. The foundation’s partners include the Bavarian University Center for Latin America (BAYLAT), the Brazil–Germany Economic and Scientific Center (WWZ-BD) headquartered in Berlin, the Instituto Martius-Staden in São Paulo, as well as various institutions and universities in Blumenau. The activities are supported by an Advisory Board, which includes representatives of BAYLAT, the donors, and FAU, as well as representatives from business and culture.
