The FAUprofund program deals with questions concerning applications by early career researchers for third-party funded projects.
We at FAU are here to help, and this program gives you the opportunity to participate in targeted professional development designed to further your research career.
Professional third-party funding in academia
At present, FAUprofund focuses on the Faculty of Business, Economics, and Law and the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology.
FAUprofund is aimed at early career researchers at FAU, in particular postdoctoral researchers, habilitation candidates and assistant professors.
The aim is to teach skills in developing project ideas, applying for third-party funding and managing and implementing third-party funded projects. The program increases participants’ chances of submitting a successful proposal and successfully implementing projects funded by third parties, for example the DFG, the EU, prestigious foundations or the BMBF.
Participation in the FAUprofound program
You can register for the individual seminars via the Graduate Center and apply for the certificate after successfully completing the program.
In order to obtain the certificate for the FAUprofund program, you have to attend the following seminars and events:
Who are the largest funding providers for third-party funded projects in academia? What are the special features of each of these funding providers? What do you need to pay attention to in your proposal? The seminars about funding providers provide participants information on basic framework conditions. At the current time, there are four seminars:
- DFG
- EU
- BMBF and foundations
- Funding for mobility from Humboldt, DAAD, and the EU (in particular Marie- Skłodowska-Curie)
You must attend at least three seminars to qualify for a certificate.
At the heart of FAUprofound is the application workshop. Before taking part in the application workshop, we would recommend attending at least two of the seminars about the funding providers DFG, BMBF or the EU (see module 1).
If you would like to attend the application workshop you first have to apply by submitting an outline of your proposed project of roughly two pages in length (problem, work plan, state of research, planned funding format). For you to get the most out of the workshop, it is essential that you have a realistic idea for a project. The application workshop consists of a one-day kick-off workshop, which lays the foundation for the following weeks, and a two-day closed-door conference. The speakers are available for individual meetings between the appointments if necessary.
Knowledge in managing third-party funding and project management in academia is essential for successfully implementing an acquired third-party funded project.
That is why attending both these seminars is obligatory for obtaining the FAUprofund certificate.
In addition, you have to attend two other seminars from the selection offered by the Graduate Center, for instance on topics such as science communication, conflict management, supervising final theses and doctoral degrees or personnel management. The seminars that can be chosen to count towards the certificate are marked accordingly in our program. Please contact us if you require other seminar topics that we have not as yet included in our program.
We would be happy to plan seminars in the coming semester if there is sufficient interest, provided we can find suitable speakers.
Methods and initiatives
The seminars are predominantly held in small groups to guarantee the maximum benefit for participants.
Methods used in the seminars vary from expert talks and inspirational presentations, group work, examples of best and worst practice and discussions of practical examples. Knowledge is usually transferred following the tandem-trainer principle to teach the material from various perspectives and different approaches. In addition, experienced researchers at FAU who have already successfully acquired third-party funding are often invited to attend a number of the seminars and share their first-hand experience with participants.
FAUprofund is an initiative of Research and Early Career Support organized by Dr. Christian Schmitt-Engel and the research coordinators of the Faculty of Business, Economics, and Law, Dr. Dennis Kirchberg, and the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology, Dr. Robert Fischer. The patron of the certificate program for early career researchers is Vice President People, Prof. Dr. Andreas Hirsch.

All postdoctoral researchers, habilitation candidates and assistant professors who are members of FAU are entitled to participate. Doctoral candidates can participate if they are in the final stages of their doctoral degree and there are still places available in the seminars.
No. FAUprofund is only open to researchers from FAU.
If there are places in the FAUprofund seminars and your application for the application workshop is successful, you can also take part as a doctoral candidate in the final stage of your doctoral degree (generally in the year before submission of your thesis).
The FAU Graduate Center is responsible for registration and organizational matters. Please direct your inquiries to Kerstin Puls. A certificate of participation is issued for each seminar you complete successfully.
In order to receive the certificate, you must complete at least three seminars from module 1, the application workshop, two obligatory seminars from module 2 (managing third-party funds and project management in academia) and two other seminars of your choice from the program from the Graduate Center.
There is no set time for completing the program. You can apply to the Graduate Center for the certificate as soon as you have all the necessary proof.
When you submit all the required certificates of participation, the Graduate Center chaired by the Vice President responsible issues the certificate. Relevant courses that you have attended at other institutions can be accredited if they are equivalent.
If you would like to attend the application workshop you first have to apply by submitting an outline of your proposed project of roughly two pages in length (problem, work plan, state of research, planned funding format) to those responsible for organizing the workshop. They then select the participants for the application workshop based on the potential of the proposed projects. The focus is on the framework conditions for an application for third-party funding, not exclusively on the level of expertise expressed in the idea for the project.
Participants are selected on the basis of the quality of the project idea and the suitability of the applicants.
The elective seminars for FAUprofund are marked accordingly in our seminar program. These are, for example, research project management, human resource management and team management, managing and motivating staff. These and other seminars from the Graduate Center at a glance.
Please contact Kerstin Puls. Our program is always tailored to requirements. We are happy to check your suggestions and plan a new seminar for the following semester if the demand is high enough and we can find qualified speakers.
Yes, provided there are still places.
If you can prove the content of the seminars, it should be possible for them to be accredited via the Graduate Center. We reserve the right to forward applications for accreditation to those responsible for organizing the workshop. They are the ones who choose participants for the application workshop.
