What is the degree program about?
Art education has the potential to foster students’ creativity and to help them develop an individual identity through their engagement with art and culture. Today, we are always surrounded by images that we pass through in our everyday lives in magazines, advertising, the press, and the digital media. Understanding visual content and communicating in images are key competencies that can develop through exposure to visual art and visual culture.
In the Art Education teaching degree program at FAU, you will receive a broad subject and didactic foundation. In addition to working on your own artistic practice, the program focuses on questions of teaching and developing the artistic and creative skills of children and adolescents. Art-historical contents as well as the examination of contemporary art complement the study of art education.

The Art Education teaching degree program includes a study of the subject and a study of the didactics of the subject and prepares students for professional art pedagogy based on a combination of theory and practice. Both parts of the program are carried out at the Chair of Art Education and Art Didactics.
A large part of the teaching degree program in the subject area is practice in the arts. The aim here is to develop one’s own artistic competencies in the breadth of the teaching subject and to develop an artistic attitude. The content of the practical studies is the two-dimensional art (e.g. drawing, painting, photography, printmaking), three-dimensional art (e.g. sculptural and plastic design with clay, paper, wood, metal, constructive design with wood) as well as digital and performative art. Artistic development enables students to deepen their knowledge in the context of artistic projects as well as in the artistic study trip. Art history includes an overview of art history and contemporary art as well as image and art analysis methods.
The study of subject didactics addresses questions of learning and teaching in the arts. In addition to the theoretical basics, it is about the development of teaching skills, didactic-methodical practice and the planning, practice and evaluation of art teaching.

The study of teaching art as a subject at elementary, middle and secondary schools focuses on a well-founded academic and didactic breadth as a condition for inspiring, student-oriented and motivating art instruction. In addition, it is important to set one’s own focus in the context of enhancing practical art competencies. Artistic projects and exhibitions at the Chair of Art Education and Art Didactics offer possible options for setting points of focus.
The study of art as a didactic subject at elementary and middle schools gives students the specialist knowledge they need to create student-oriented art lessons for the respective target level.
In accordance with LPO I, the Chair of Art Education and Art Didactics also offers the basic qualifications in art for students who do not study art as a teaching or didactic subject in the Elementary School Teacher Training Program.

To become a teacher of art at elementary, middle and secondary schools, you should enjoy art and culture, like to create things yourself and be involved in a wide range of artistic activities. You should also be interested in working with children and young people. The study of art as a teaching subject at elementary, middle and secondary schools requires the passing of an assessment test. This is considered proof of artistic ability for the academic studies and must be passed before the start of the teaching degree program.
The study of art as a didactic subject does not require an assessment of qualifications, but basic knowledge of artistic creation (e.g. perspective drawing, safe use of colors, basic knowledge of art history) is necessary for successful study.

International cooperation and networks with Japan, Italy and Switzerland, among others, enable additional development perspectives for the students, concerning not only artistic practice but also the development of intercultural competences.
A wide range of courses, a high level of artistic practice and individual focus support the development of professional expertise and offer students a variety of perspectives.

The program concludes with the first state examination (1. Staatsexamen) and prepares students for the second phase of teacher training (Referendariat).
At the Chair of Art Education and Art Didactics, the perspective on non-school educational institutions can be added with the Master’s degree in Art Education. Fields of activity can be found in museums, art schools, municipal institutions as well as in the independent art and culture industry.

Under certain conditions, students in all teaching degree programs can apply for the academic degree “Bachelor” after usually 6 semesters according to the LAPO. The type of Bachelor’s degree depends on the type of school studied and, if applicable, the choice of subject. The study of art as a teaching subject requires the passing of an assessment test, which consists of an artistic portfolio and a practical examination. The registration deadline for the assessment is 15.6. It is advisable to take advantage of a consultation beforehand. Please contact the Chair of Art Education and Art Didactics directly for portfolio dates.
The study of art as a didactic subject at elementary and secondary schools does not require an entrance assessment.
In addition to the general qualification for university entrance (Abitur), there are other access options for studying at FAU.
