Geography: Physical Geography

Geography: Physical Geography (B.Sc.)

In the study of geography, the focus is on understanding social developments and natural processes in their spatial dimensions. The Physical Geography program combines scientific methods with geographical understanding and covers a wide range of topics such as climate change, geomorphology, hydrology and landscape development.

What is the degree program about?

Geography is more than “urban-rural-river” or the pure knowledge about the location of Germany on the globe. Snow and ice in the water cycle, soil and vegetation in a changing environment or formative processes on the earth’s surface are focal points of physical geography. Here you will deal with current topics such as climate change, global resources, ecological crises, natural hazards and a variety of special methods (e.g. geographic information systems, satellite remote sensing, laboratory analyses). You should not be too one-sidedly interested, because as minor subjects you can expect mainly scientific neighboring disciplines such as biology, chemistry, mathematics or physics, but also economics or computer science. In statistics and computer science courses you will learn, for example, how to evaluate climatological or ecological data sets in order to make predictions for global environmental change. You should also bring along a bit of wanderlust, because the numerous excursions of the degree program are not only limited to Germany and Europe. Overall, physical geography is a very versatile degree program that opens up a variety of career opportunities and enables you to understand, explain and help shape spatially related ecological and social problems.
