All students and prospective students must submit proof to FAU of health insurance in Germany before enrollment, regardless of their nationality and the type of insurance they have.
Students are generally obliged to have statutory health insurance for the duration of their studies. You can be released from this obligation, for example if you have private health insurance or health insurance from abroad. This is determined exclusively by a German statutory health insurance provider.
Doctoral candidates and guest students only are exempt from this electronic notifications procedure.
You can only enroll if you have electronic notification of health insurance status (known as M10).
Steps to take

If you are insured with a statutory health insurance provider:
Contact your statutory health insurance provider in good time before you enroll at FAU and request electronic transfer of notification M10 about your insurance status.
Include FAU’s reference number (Absendernummer) H0001887. The health insurance provider then sends the notification directly to FAU, which usually takes 3-4 working days.
FAU is not permitted to accept notifications on paper or health insurance cards, this is not sufficient proof of insurance cover.
If you are privately insured:
Contact a statutory (!) health insurance provider in good time before you enroll at FAU and request electronic transfer of notification M10 about your insurance status.
Include FAU’s reference number (Absendernummer) H0001887. The health insurance provider then sends the notification directly to FAU, which usually takes 3-4 working days.
Private health insurance companies do not participate in the electronic notification process.
If you have insurance from abroad:
Please contact a German statutory health insurance provider and request the electronic transfer of notification M10 about your health insurance status in Germany.
Include FAU’s reference number (Absendernummer) H0001887. The health insurance provider then sends the notification directly to FAU, which usually takes 3-4 working days.
FAU is not permitted to accept notifications on paper or travel insurance documents, this is not sufficient proof of insurance cover.
If you change statutory health insurance provider or the type of insurance during your studies, you must request a new electronic notification of your insurance status (M11) to be sent to FAU (reference number/Absendernummer H0001887) by your (new) statutory health insurance provider.
The statutory health insurance providers notify FAU if you have not paid your health insurance contributions. If this is the case, you cannot re-register for the following semester until FAU has received confirmation from your statutory health insurance provider that you have paid the contributions that you owe (notification M13).
