Shanghai Ranking 2021: FAU one of the top 20 universities in Germany

The new Shanghai university ranking has been released. In comparison to other German universities, FAU has moved up one place to number 15. On the international level, it has come in at place 248, an improvement of five places.

The evaluation is based on various performance indicators. Compared to last year, FAU improved particularly in the categories of citations per researcher and highly cited researchers. FAU performed particularly well with respect to highly cited researchers, with one more FAU researcher making it into the list than the year before.

FAU also scored highly in the Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, and is among the top 100 universities in the world for five subjects. FAU is number one in Germany for Telecommunication Engineering.

About the Shanghai Ranking

The Shanghai Ranking, officially known as the Academic Ranking of World Universities, has been published on an annual basis by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University since 2003. Universities and a total of 54 individual subjects are assessed on the basis of various indicators during the ranking which focuses on research. Indicators taken into consideration include research publications, citations, Nobel prizes and Fields medals. More than 2000 universities were evaluated and the best 1000 listed in this year’s ranking.
