Praise from jury for the use of digital tools and ARIADNE program

The Department of Artificial Intelligence in Biomedical Engineering (AIBE) at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) has the “Best research environment 2024”. The award was launched and presented for the first time this year by “Die Junge Akademie” and the Volkswagen Foundation.

The jury’s statement: “The Department of Artificial Intelligence in Biomedical Engineering (AIBE) offers an innovative research environment with a focus on socially relevant topics, interdisciplinarity and community. Flexible workspaces, a communal space and digital tools such as the coffee list promote efficiency and team spirit. Social activities, a culture of feedback, conferences and mentoring programs such as ARIADNE strengthen both individual employees and the community. AIBE supports FAU’s measures to promote gender and diversity and plans to improve the healthcare system with partners from industry and research.”

Optimum conditions for great achievements in science

With the award for “Best research environment”, Die Junge Akademie and the Volkswagen Foundation are honoring institutions that have established an environment in which researchers can fully realize their potential. In its assessment, the jury attaches particular importance to young researchers receiving guidance and support during the early phases of their career in a fair and inspiring environment.

The jury selected 24 teams from 270 applications for the shortlist. All these teams have received the award for “Best research environment 2024”. The certificates were presented in Berlin on June 7, 2025.
