Large-scale project involving FAU investigated the smells of the past

The European-wide research project “Odeuropa” involving researchers from Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) recently received the European Heritage Award / Europa Nostra Award from the European Commission, and now has a chance of winning the public choice award as well.

What did it smell like in a café in Montmartre at the end of the 19th century? What about on the battlefield of Waterloo? In other words: what did the past smell like? Researchers from five European countries have sought the answers. The aim of the project was to establish smells and the experience of smells as an essential component of cultural heritage: as a means of stirring emotions, bringing history alive and creating multisensory connections to the past.

All winners of the European Heritage Award / Europa Nostra Award now have the chance to win the public choice award worth 10,000 euros.
