FAU is among the top ten in Germany
One indication of a researcher’s reputation among peers is how often their publications are cited. This measurable factor is taken as the basis for evaluating all universities in the CWTS Leiden Ranking Open Edition. Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg has performed excellently in this year’s ranking, particularly in comparison with other universities in Germany.
Taken on the basis of the most-cited publications, FAU is ranked number 7 in Germany, and has therefore remained in the top ten every year since the Leiden Ranking was published for the first time in 2007. Internationally, FAU is on place 247, remaining like last year among the top 250 best universities in the world.
FAU among the top ten in Germany in three groups
The most cited publications were summarized in subject groups and compared with each other. FAU is in the top ten in Germany in three groups: Biomedical Science in 9th place, Mathematics and Computer Science in 6th place and Physical Science and Engineering in 5th place.
Internationally, FAU gained a place in the top 200 in the groups Physical Science and Engineering and Biomedical Science. A total of 1,500 universities worldwide were compared.
About the CWTS Leiden Ranking
The CWTS Leiden Ranking is published annually by the Centre for Science and Technology Studies of the University of Leiden in the Netherlands. It was published for the first time in 2007, and since 2024, there has been the Open Edition, that draws its data from the publicly available publication database “Open Alex”. A total of 2,800 international and 73 German universities were included in the ranking. FAU’s ranking is based on the ranking list P (top 10%) that measures the number of a university’s publications that belong to the top 10 percent of the most-cited articles in their subject area and year of publication. The citations are normalized by subject and year of publication in order to allow fair comparisons between disciplines.
