Moving knowledge: Experience FAU’s new digital appearance

As of 2 pm on November 20, 2025, Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg has a new digital home: fau.de. Our new modern and attractive website fau.de is not only packed with important information all about our University, it also specifically promotes FAU’s identity.

A window into FAU’s world

“Our new website shows just how much people and ideas breathe life into FAU,” says FAU President Prof. Dr. Joachim Hornegger. “The website is a window into the world of the University. It is not only a valuable source of information, it should also spark curiosity about our University.”

Our brand as a compass

The new design theme “FAU Elemental” makes our mission “Moving knowledge” visible: Lines and shapes, inspired by our vivid FAU logo, give insights and open perspectives. Nearly all the images show real people at our University: students, researchers, employees. This makes the website authentic and approachable. Our brand values of innovation, diversity and passion are reflected in every aspect of the website. “Every decision in this project was guided by making FAU as a whole visible and making its identity come alive in every detail”, explains Silke Sauer, Chief Brand Officer at FAU and responsible for the relaunch.

Targeted navigation

The new structure is deliberately orientated towards the needs of the various target groups: the focus is on studying, research and the University. Prospective students, students and researchers can all find the information relevant to them quickly. Entry points specifically tailored to each of the target groups make it easier for them to find exactly what they are looking for. Innovation has deliberately been given a prominent place, expressing our position as the most innovative university in Germany.

Built for tomorrow

The technical design of the website means it will remain fit for the future for a long time to come: It is accessible, optimized for mobile devices, has an improved search function and is based on WordPress as a flexibly expandable system. It was implemented in collaboration with the agency Modula from Hamburg (technology) and Studio Good from Berlin (design). “Close partnerships on an equal footing have led to a website that showcases all aspects of the University and will continue to lead the way into the future,” says Katrin Burkhardt, project manager for the FAU web relaunch.

#FAUtogether: a joint effort

Behind the relaunch is a two-year process in which the Brand Office, Communications and Press with the web team, CIO, RRZE and CBO all worked together hand in hand. Every aspect and every feature on the website have been checked consistently for visibility, user-friendliness and brand identity. The end result shows what #FAUtogether means: a team effort going beyond departmental boundaries.

The beginning, not the end

When the website goes live, that will just mark the start: In the coming months we will work to also add more content to fau.eu, and all the pages for faculties, chairs and organizational units at FAU will be swapped over to the new design step by step, beginning with the Faculty of Business, Economics, and Law in December. That apart, we will continue to maintain and improve the website over the coming weeks.
