Shanghai subject ranking: FAU in the top 100 worldwide in five subjects

2025 Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects has been published

FAU is listed among the 100 most prestigious universities in the world in five subjects (four in 2024). In Germany, FAU even managed to jump into the top 10 in 18 subjects (17 in 2024). A total of more than 2000 universities all over the world were evaluated in the ranking.

How good is FAU compared to other international universities?

In Telecommunication Engineering, FAU came in the top 50 worldwide. With Energy Science and Engineering, Dentistry and Oral Science, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Human Biological Sciences, a further four subjects at FAU are in the top 100. In another eight subjects, namely Mathematics, Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Automation and Control, Earth Science, Medical Technology, Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering and Physics, FAU was ranked among the top 150 in the world.

How good is FAU in Germany?

At a national level, FAU made it into the top 10 with 18 subjects in 2025: Telecommunication Engineering is at the top of the ranking in first place; Electrical and Electronic Engineering in third place – with Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Science, Computer Science and Engineering and Energy Science and Engineering all also being ranked in third place. Automation and Control came in fourth, and Materials Science and Engineering fifth. In sixth place are: Human Biological Sciences, Dentistry and Oral Sciences, Mathematics, and Mechanical Engineering. Earth Sciences and Metallurgical Engineering are ranked seventh, and Biomedical Engineering, Business Administration and Chemical Engineering gained eighth place. The subjects Physics and Chemistry share place nine.

About the ranking

The Shanghai subject ranking, officially known as the “Global Ranking of Academic Subjects”, has been published on an annual basis by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University since 2009. A total of 57 individual subjects were assessed from the fields of natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences and social sciences on the basis of various indicators. The ranking focuses on research. Indicators taken into consideration include research publications, citations, Nobel prizes and Fields medals. More than 2000 universities throughout the world were assessed for the ranking in 2025.
