How an artist inspires medical students

With the installation of an artwork called “Medicine. Teaching. Research. Life. – MCO Medizincampus Oberfranken” by Birgit Osten, Medizincampus Oberfranken (MCO) will receive a work of art that combines science, people, and the region in an expressive, contemporary visual language and will set a lasting accent for the further development and expansion of the campus, where the first medical students recently celebrated their graduation. MCO is a joint project between Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU), Universitätsklinikum Erlangen, the health service of the district of Upper Franconia, Klinikum Bayreuth GmbH, and the University of Bayreuth.

Expertise, empathy, and the region

“Science needs spaces that inspire,” says Birgit Osten. “My goal was to make content visible while creating a positive atmosphere. My art strives to radiate energy and have a motivating effect.”

The motif translates the spirit of Medizincampus into a visual narrative: It reflects scientific expertise, human empathy, and regional roots. Location, artistic collaborations, and medical research and teaching merge into a vibrant composition that embodies appreciation, identification, and community.

“The artwork combines scientific excellence with regional identity. It expresses the appeal and vibrancy of MCO as a place of work,” says FAU Professor Michael Vieth, Professorship of General Pathology at MCO, who donated the artwork to the medical campus.
