Program overview

What is the degree program about?

Dentistry is a medical specialty that includes the prevention, detection and treatment of diseases of the teeth, mouth and jaw. The degree programs in dentistry and medicine are closely linked, as pathological changes in the oral cavity can affect the entire body. The initial symptoms of various diseases often manifest in the oral cavity. Great importance is attached to interdisciplinary thinking in the degree program in dentistry.
During their studies, students receive theoretical, scientific and practical training. At the beginning of the course, students study science subjects such as physics and chemistry as well as fundamental subjects such as anatomy and physiology. As students progress, medical and dental subjects (phantom courses, treatment courses) are gradually incorporated into the study plan. The practical part of the course is designed to prepare students as well as possible for their future working life.
After successfully completing your studies, you will be licensed to practice dentistry. Further specialist training in medicine is not required to work as a dentist. However, four years of further training as a specialist dentist for orthodontics or specialist dentist for oral surgery as well as further curricula and associated specializations are possible. To become a specialist in oral and maxillofacial surgery, you need to have completed a degree in medicine and dentistry as well as five years of specialist training.

The dentistry degree program is divided into three sections.

In the first four semesters, you will deal intensively with science subjects (physics, chemistry, etc.), anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, dental propaedeutics and materials science. You will also complete a four-week nursing internship and training in first aid. Afterwards, you will be able to take the first part of the State Examination in Dentistry.

In the next two semesters, you will learn the practical skills required by dentists in controlled training scenarios. You will learn tooth preservation and dental prosthodontics working with models in phantom courses. You will also learn the basics of orthodontics, oral surgery and emergency medicine. At the end of the second part of the program, you will take an oral practical examination.

In the third part of the State Examination in Dentistry, (semesters 7-10), you will focus on treating patients. However, in addition to the dental courses in conservation, prosthodontics, orthodontics and surgery, you will also gain medical knowledge. You will acquire knowledge of pathology, pharmacology, internal medicine, dermatology and many other medical disciplines. In addition, you will receive interdisciplinary training in cross-sectional areas. To gain an impression of dental work and your future profession, you will complete a four-week clinical traineeship in a dental practice cooperating with the university. Afterwards, you will take the third part of the State Examination in Dentistry, which consists of an oral practical examination and a written examination.

Graduates must prove two years of practical experience as a dental assistant in a dental clinic or practice before they can be recognized as a dentist by statutory health insurance providers.

Most people who have studied dentistry become dentists. However, you might choose to train as a dentist for orthodonics or a dentist in oral surgery, which takes an additional four years. A medical degree is a prerequisite for further training as a specialist in maxillofacial surgery.
