Program overview

What is the degree program about?

The Digital Humanities module program is an orientation course at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU), which is studied for two semesters. During this time, students can attend lectures, seminars and tutorials of the Bachelor’s degree program in Digital Humanities and Social Sciences and take examinations, which can be accredited to a subsequent degree program. Students also have full student status as defined by the Bavarian Higher Education Act.

FAU’s Digital Humanities module program offers students the opportunity to acquire sound knowledge of the foundations of the subject and practical application skills in the field of digital humanities and social sciences and to complete the course with a certificate. Students of all disciplines, prospective students, working professionals and senior citizens can enroll in this module program.

The module program comprises 30 ECTS, which are acquired in two semesters (standard duration of study, extendible to three semesters) through successful participation in lectures, seminars and practical exercises in Digital Humanities and Computer Science. The choice of modules is discussed with subject advisors and individually arranged according to prior knowledge and interests.

The modules are divided into three areas in terms of content:

  • Fundamentals of digital humanities
  • Fundamentals of computer science and mathematics
  • Specialization

All three areas have a pool of modules that allows an individual curriculum to be put together in consultation with subject advisors and depending on prior knowledge and students’ desired profiling.

Detailed and binding information about the curriculum is available in the degree program and examination regulations and the degree program structure.

The program is aimed at prospective students with university entrance qualifications who are interested in the interface between the subject cultures of the humanities and social sciences and information technology. Due to the cross-faculty, transdisciplinary concept of the study program, students acquire fundamental skills in both areas, in computer science as well as in the humanities and social sciences, which enable them both to develop and apply new processes and methods for researching data in the social sciences and humanities, and to understand the socio-technical prerequisites of digitization and the profound social change associated with it.
