Program overview

What is the degree program about?

Education does not only take place in kindergartens and schools, and educators do not only work with children and young people. They provide support for learning processes in all areas of life and promote the education and development of people at all ages. There are a variety of subdivisions: Vocational, Elementary, Recreational, Cultural, Art, Moral, Music, Organizational, Religious, School, Social, Sport and Business Education, Intercultural Education, Adult Education, etc.

The Education degree program in Erlangen offers above all a scientific introduction to general pedagogical questions. The main focus is on learning pedagogical ways of thinking and research methods. During their studies, students learn about pedagogical basics and historical developments of the subject as well as about pedagogical topics and fields of work. This opens up the possibility of systematically grasping pedagogical issues and developing solutions for them. In the compulsory internship, the focus is on independently applying pedagogical action knowledge.

The degree program is based on a diversity-sensitive and critical understanding of pedagogy and educational science, which makes the handling of difference, the question of conditions and possibilities of transcending the social status quo, the production of subjectivity and the empowerment of subjects (in their relational entanglements with the world) the decisive reference points of university teaching.

The degree program consists of compulsory and elective modules. Compulsory modules are Introduction to Pedagogy, Historical and Systematic Foundations of Pedagogy, Pedagogical Research, Pedagogical Fields of Work, Introduction to Pedagogical Fields as well as the internship and the Bachelor’s thesis. Elective modules are Pedagogical Foundations and Pedagogical Research. After the first year of study (i.e. after the second semester), there is a foundation and orientation exam, which is considered passed if at least two modules have been successfully completed. A central element of the study program is the educationally linked thematization, analysis and reflection of social and cultural differentiations in the context of progressive social transformation processes including the associated institutions and organizations (e.g. migration and flight, digitalization, trans-nationalization, social segregation, poverty).

The focus of the degree program in Erlangen is on organizational pedagogy and cultural education.

Generally speaking, organizational pedagogy deals with how to support learning processes in and by organizations. Specifically, this involves tasks in training and further education, in personnel and organizational development, as well as in coaching and organizational consulting.

Arts education aims to enable children, young people and adults to engage with art and culture in all their diversity and thus support them in shaping their lifeworld and in participating in culture and society.

  • Interest in educational, social, and labor market policy contexts
  • Willingness and ability to read and write a lot (good understanding of texts and good written expression)
  • Willingness and ability to deal with technical language and foreign words
  • Openness to English-language texts
  • Ability to deal independently with more demanding texts in a critical and reflective manner

In the consecutive Master’s degree program „Pedagogy M.A.“ you will then have the opportunity to deepen the above-mentioned questions with regard to focal points.

As a professional qualification, the degree program provides competencies for the following fields of activity, among others:
