Program overview

What is the degree program about?

Cultural Geography can be studied in combination with numerous other subjects from the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology as part of a two subject Bachelor’s degree program either as the major (85 ECTS) or minor (70 ECTS) subject. We would recommend a combination with political sciences, sociology, economics or languages.

During your studies you will explore processes and correlations concerning the spatial organization and representation of societies in across the globe. First of all, you will learn the basics of social and spatial theories, urban and regional development, demography and migration, intercultural interaction, and regional and global economic processes. The degree program focuses particularly on connections between the scientific and social sciences perspectives to gain a comprehensive understanding of the relationships between society and environment. You will also explore the design, implementation and analysis of surveys, cartography and all other methods used in the social sciences and regional science.

In Cultural Geography, you are required to complete twelve modules following the same content as modules in the one subject Bachelor’s degree program.

  • 1st-2nd semester: Foundations
In the first two semesters you are taught the theoretical foundations of cultural geography and physical geography in lectures and two seminars with a field trip. As well as subject knowledge, you also learn techniques for academic work.
  • 3rd-4th semester: Methods
In the third and fourth semesters the focus is on training in scientific methods. During lectures, you receive an introduction to cartography, qualitative and quantitative methods, GIS and remote sensing. The 4th semester concludes with a six-day field placement during which you can practice all the surveying methods you have learned in theory “on site” and put the theoretical knowledge from your lectures into practice. A minor field seminar lasting a few days introduces you to the geography of local regions.
  • 5th to 6th semester: Specialization
In the last two semesters, you learn the foundations of empirical social research and working with geographical information systems (GIS) in method seminars. You also attend advanced lectures on selected topics of cultural geography.

Your degree program will take you on field trips to a wide range of destinations across the globe. Costs will be incurred depending on the destination.

Geography is at the interface of science, the humanities and social sciences. As you will develop strong methodological skills during the degree program and also study related subjects, there are a wide range of possible careers. By choosing specializations during the degree program you can increase your chances on the job market.

Possible combinations without overlaps

With these subject combinations, there are generally no overlaps in the timetable.

Possible overlaps in the timetable

If you combine these subjects, individual courses may overlap in your timetable. For this reason, you can only combine the following subjects with your chosen subject after a consultation. Students are responsible for ensuring that the combination can be studied and that the deadlines set out in Section 11 of the ABMStPOPhil are met. When enrolling, proof of a corresponding consultation with the Central Student Advisory Service or the Student Service Center (Faculty of Humanities, Social Studies, and Theology) must be submitted.
