Program overview

What is the degree program about?

The additional subject Islamic Religious Education prepares teachers to complete the subject “Islamic Religious Education” with the State Examination for primary schools, and secondary schools (Mittelschule, Realschule) and to teach at state-run schools.

A certificate program is offered for the teaching profession at “Gymnasium” secondary schools.

The content of the supplementary program covers Islamic religious texts, traditions, historical ideological developments, key theological questions, selected Islamic cultural areas, non-Islamic religions, Islamic religious education and the teaching methodology of Islam.

The additional subject “Islamic Religious Education” is interdisciplinary. By attending lectures and seminars offered by related disciplines (Islamic Studies, non-Islamic theologies and religious education, religious studies, philosophy), students become familiar with the change of perspective in each subject. The ability to integrate such multi-layered approaches in a meaningful way is a prerequisite for teaching Islamic religion. The focus here is on keeping questions alive and paths of knowledge open, which are to be explored by the adolescents as they develop their own faith. Teaching should accompany them in this process and enable them to position themselves freely, but with personal responsibility with regard to Islam as a religion and a way of life. The study of Islamic religious education imparts the basic and in-depth knowledge of Islam required for teaching. Emphasis is placed on the practical aspects of life and teaching, but also on the overall social and global context. In this context, the program also has a decidedly Islamic theological profile that goes beyond that of religious education.
