Program overview

What is the degree program about?

The Master’s degree program in “Learning Design – Digital Transformation in Education” focuses on the design and creation of digital teaching and learning concepts for adult learners. Students investigate the basics of media-based teaching and combine these in theory and in practice with aspects of (media) technology. They address current trends in education. Students gain the skills needed to be able to design, implement and evaluate teaching and learning concepts.

The degree program takes an interdisciplinary approach and focuses on close links between theory and practice to ensure that graduates are capable of implementing the concepts they design in practice. The Master’s degree program is based on modules and addresses various dimensions of learning design. As well as compulsory modules teaching students the fundamentals and more extensive knowledge, the practical and project modules give students insights into the practicalities of learning design and the related research. Provision is made for students to spend time studying abroad as part of their degree.

Students benefit in particular from the teaching in the degree program if they are interested in topics relating to media-based education and enjoy combining different perspectives. Learning Design is aimed at students who would like to improve their theoretical and practical knowledge at the intersection between teaching, media and technology and are curious about how to design learning processes for adult learners.

The degree program is aimed at training students who intend pursuing a career in adult education, lifelong learning, university teaching or similar contexts. Its focus differs considerably from other media-education based degree programs that concentrate predominantly on schools.

The degree program takes an interdisciplinary approach and focuses on close links between theory and practice to ensure that graduates are capable of implementing the concepts they design. This degree program at FAU offers synergies in research and teaching with the broader area of media education, with two chairs and one professorship from this area involved in designing the relevant content and structures. This opens the door to research topics in this area.

The Innovation in Learning Institute, which is involved in innovative practical projects in the context of digital education, some of which have and encourage a European or international connection, also provides students with opportunities for putting their concepts into practice.

Graduates are qualified for careers in areas such as HR development, university teaching, adult education and training. Depending on the graduate’s personal interests and focus, their future career may concentrate more on advice and consulting or take a more practical approach. As education embraces digitalization, it is to expected that learning designers will be able to choose from dynamic and varied career options.
