Program overview
What is the degree program about?
This degree programme combines management research and theory in a unique way by combining practical specializations with interdisciplinary theory relevant to various professional fields. In addition to soft skills, students acquire the ability to apply theoretical teaching in case studies and projects with practical relevance.
The course offers not only a general overview of management-related topics, but also plenty of scope for individual specialization. By dovetailing current management research with insights into business practice, the Master in Management conveys a cross-divisional and cross-functional perspective. Application skills (e.g. through the development of soft skills or working with case studies and projects) are learned as part of the knowledge transfer. In order to best address the central characteristics of modern management, the course teaches content on topics such as innovation, entrepreneurship, digitalization, sustainability and internationalization.
The degree program (120 ECTS) has a standard duration of four semesters and consists of a compulsory elective area, a specialization area and the Master’s thesis. While the compulsory elective area teaches the fundamentals of management, the specialization area prepares students for specific management tasks in different types of companies. The course can also be completed as a part-time course. In this case, the standard period of study doubles to 8 semesters, but the course content remains unaffected by the part-time arrangement.
The degree program (120 ECTS) has a standard duration of four semesters and consists of 7 compulsory courses (35 ECTS), 11 elective modules (55 ECTS) and the Master’s thesis (30 ECTS).
While the core courses ensure the teaching of the holistic perspective of management, the electives enable students to specialize in one or more application areas of management.
While the compulsory part consists of teaching management perspectives, the specialization part prepares students for specific management tasks in different types of enterprise.
The chosen specialization allows students to develop a skills profile that is suitable for their future profession. In the electives, students can choose courses from the following content areas: “Strategic management & International business”, “Value creation & Digital transformation”, “Entrepreneurship & Innovation”, “Financial management”, “Health care management”, “Marketing management”, “Supply chain management”, “Sustainable & responsible management”, and “Management research”.
Students can freely choose eleven modules (55 ECTS) from nine different subject areas in the area of specialization and combine them according to their individual preferences. If at least four modules (20 ECTS) from a module group are taken, the specialization chosen is shown as a major in the degree certificate. Students who prefer a generalist course of study and do not wish to specialize have the opportunity to freely choose the entire 55 ECTS of the specialization area. Further information can be found on the course-specific website at https://www.mim.wiso.rw.fau.de/program/.
The degree program is aimed at graduates with a Bachelor’s degree in business studies or any other subject from a university. The required knowledge of business and economics must be demonstrated in an admission test. More information on the admission process is available here: ADMISSION – Master in Management (fau.de)
Students of this degree program are prepared for careers in middle and upper management at companies of different sizes and in different industries. They have the opportunity to take specialization courses that focus on management tasks in a specific type of company or in a specific industry. Having acquired basic knowledge in compulsory elective modules and expanded upon it through specialization, graduates are also prepared for work in business consulting.
