Special features

The teaching degree program requires increased self-organization. Students have to decide for themselves which courses and exams fit best into their schedules, and they also have to be careful not to take on too much at once.

Under certain conditions, students in all teaching degree programs can apply for the academic degree „Bachelor“ after usually 6 semesters according to the LAPO. The type of Bachelor’s degree depends on the type of school studied and, if applicable, the choice of subject. Further information can be found on the homepage of the Center for Teacher Education (ZfL).

Subject combination possibilities:

Orientation Week

During the week of October 9-13, 2023, the Departments of Mathematics, Data Science, and Physics, in conjunction with FSI, will offer an orientation week for all first-year students in the following programs:

– Bachelor Mathematics

– Bachelor of Economics and Mathematics

– Bachelor Industrial Mathematics

– Teaching degree (grammar school) Mathematics

– Bachelor Data Science

– Bachelor Physics

– Teaching degree (grammar school) Physics

The course is optional, but participation is strongly recommended.

Program overview

What is the degree program about?

The subject content of the degree program is largely determined by the Bavarian State Ministry of Education, Science and the Arts. Thus, linear algebra, analysis, stochastics, geometry, number theory and, for grammar school teachers, applied mathematics, algebra and function theory are on the timetable.

As a math teacher, you will not just need to know your subject but also how to teach, and therefore the program includes methods for teaching and learning math in the subject didactics of mathematics.

It should be noted that in addition to the study of one or two teaching subjects, teaching degree programs include study in education science and subject didactics as well as completion of placements at schools.

Teaching secondary education (Gymnasium)

This teaching degree program includes the study of two teaching subjects, including subject didactics, in a standard period of study of 9 semesters. At FAU, mathematics can be combined with German, English, computer science, Latin, physics, Protestant religious education, Catholic religious education (in cooperation with the University of Bamberg), sports, psychology (in cooperation with the University of Bamberg) and economics.

The courses in mathematics in the first year of study are the two modules Analysis and Linear Algebra in Erlangen, which are also required for the Bachelor’s programs. On the basis of the course achievements to be acquired in the first 6 semesters, a Bachelor’s degree can be awarded upon application (Bachelor of Arts, in the case of the combination with Computer Science or Physics: Bachelor of Science). The written assignment, which must be completed for the teaching degree program, is counted as a Bachelor’s thesis upon application.

Teaching degree programs for elementary, middle, secondary schools Grundschule, Mittelschule, Realschule) and vocational schools

The standard duration of study for teaching degrees for elementary, middle and secondary school (Grundschule, Mittelschule, Realschule) is 7 semesters. A second subject must be selected for the teaching degree program for secondary school (Realschule); chemistry, physics, computer science, economics, German, English, (Protestant) religious education, art, music and sports can be combined with mathematics. Upon application, students of this degree program may also be awarded a Bachelor of Education.

Teaching degree programs for vocational schools

Mathematics can also be chosen as a teaching subject in the two Bachelor’s/Master’s degree programs leading to a teaching degree for vocational schools: “Vocational Education Technology” and “Business Studies/Business Education”. The standard period of study for a teaching degree for vocational schools is 10 semesters in total.

Applicants who wish to study mathematics as part of the Bachelor’s degree program “Vocational Education/Social Pedagogy” located at the University of Bamberg must enroll in mathematics (Bachelor of Education) at FAU.

The study of mathematics as a teaching subject begins with independent courses at the campus in Nuremberg (Regensburger Str. 160). In the first year of study, the mathematics module “Elements of Linear Algebra” and – in the second semester – the first part of the mathematics module “Elements of Analysis” must be attended in Nuremberg.

Details on the requirements in all teaching degree programs can be found in the Examination Regulations for Teaching Degree Programs I and the Module Handbook.

You do not need any special prior knowledge for the course itself. The most important thing is that you are interested in the subject matter, so that you can have fun and enjoy your studies, even if things get stressful from time to time.
