Medical Process Management (MPM) (M.Sc.)
Medical Process Management (MPM) is a Master’s degree course (full-time study, 120 ECTS) for students with a first university degree. It lasts three semesters plus the time required to complete the Master’s thesis.
This course imparts medical knowledge, knowledge of the healthcare system, healthcare IT and skills in quality and process management. The aim is to increase both patient benefit and added value in the healthcare sector through effective and efficient processes.
Only FAU offers a course of this kind. The course begins in the winter semester.

What is the degree program about?
The Medical process management course teaches how medical and organizational processes in the healthcare sector can be designed efficiently, economically and in a patient-oriented manner. It combines management knowledge with medical understanding in order to better coordinate complex processes – for example, in clinics or medical practices. The aim is to increase the quality of care, use resources in a more targeted manner and solve interface problems between different players in the healthcare system. The focus is always on the balance between medical progress, patient well-being and cost-effectiveness.
The master’s degree program teaches content in the areas of:

- Project management and business processes
- treatment pathways, SOPs and checklists
- IT-supported process in medicine

Semester 4
- Module 4.1: Master examination: Master thesis and oral examination
- Information literacy: Use essential documents (examination regulations, module handbook), check e-mails regularly and search for information independently.
- Self-organization and time management: working steadily, preparing and following up on courses, meeting deadlines and carefully registering for examinations.
- Social and team skills: organizing study groups, maintaining an exchange with fellow students and lecturers and accepting support.
- Problem-solving skills: identifying problems in good time, knowing the right people to contact and actively seeking help.
- Communication skills: Communicate with lecturers, study coordinators and the examinations office on a factual level, express concerns clearly.
- Practical focus: The master´s degree program prepares students specifically for immediate entry into the professional world and responds to the increasing demand for specialists with knowledge of medicine and business.

Language skills
- German and English are required for the degree program. Further criteria can be found in the general admission requirements.
- German language skills for international applicants: DSH 2 (written 2 / oral 1) or equivalent
Content related master requirements
- Completion of a relevant degree – A first professionally qualification from a university in fields such as, for example:
– Economics and social sciences (e.g., health economics, public health, social economics, industrial engineering)
– Computer science, engineering or technology (e.g., medical technology, medical informatics, biomedical technology) - Above-average academic success – final grade of at least 2.0 („good“) or ranking among the top 50% of the year – for other grading systems: a comparable grade („good pass“).
- Applicants with an overall grade between 2.01 and 3.00 will be invited to an oral qualification assessment.
- Applicants with an overall grade lower than 3.00 will typically receive a rejection notice with reasons and instructions on legal remedies.
- Implementation of a procedure to determine the qualification
- Admission possible before completion of the Bachelor’s degree program if:
– At least 140 ECTS have been achieved or – a certificate is available that all examinations for the degree have been registered and the degree is expected in the current semester
– The Bachelor’s degree must be proven no later than one year after the start of the Master’s degree course (admission is conditional).
Details and notes
- The application deadline for the winter semester is from February 15 to July 15 each year.
- The admissions committee reviews and evaluates all applications in August. You will then receive either a decision or an invitation to the qualification assessment test. The qualification assessment procedure is described in detail in Annex 2 of the examination regulations for the master’s degree program in Medical Process Management.
