Oriental Studies (B.A.)

In the Oriental Studies degree program, you will immerse yourself in the history, religions, and languages of the cultural region traditionally known as the Orient. The focus of the degree program in Erlangen lies in examining the interface between Arabic-speaking regions (from North Africa to Central Asia, from Malta to Sudan) and the Islamic cultural region (including Turkey and Iran, for example). In addition to Arabic and the history and religion of Islam, students also study other semitic languages and literature from the region, such as Hebrew, examine Judaism and Christianity in the Orient and have the opportunity to delve deeper into aspects of history and society in Turkey. This enables students to gain varied perspectives of a fascinating cultural region as well as in-depth background knowledge for examining current issues.

Program overview

What is the degree program about?

Beyond stereotypes, the Oriental Studies degree program aims to get to the bottom of things by examining the history of the Islamic world, the religions of the Orient, Oriental languages, and the rich literatures of this region with the intention of providing sound background knowledge for the consideration and understanding of historical and contemporary topics related to the Orient.

There are many things to discover such as the fact that the German language contains a number of Arabic loanwords, the Qur’an refers to many stories from the Bible, a large number of inventions originate from the Orient, and that the Orient has preserved knowledge of the beginnings of philosophy for the world. The basis for studying the Orient in the Oriental Studies degree program in Erlangen is the intensive study of the Arabic language, the knowledge of which opens up a variety of perspectives surrounding this cultural region.

In the modular two-subject Bachelor’s degree program, you can choose Oriental Studies as either your first or your second subject. When taken as a first subject, students must write their Bachelor’s thesis in the subject and complete an 8-week language course abroad. Two translation courses in Erlangen can be taken instead of the language course abroad. When taken as a first subject, students must also learn a second Oriental language, usually for two semesters. Turkish, Hebrew and Persian are offered on a regular basis. As a first subject, students have to complete nine modules (teaching and learning units that are self-contained with examinations taken during the program) or eight modules when taken as a second subject.

The modules are as follows:

  • Arabic I-IV
  • History of the Islamic World
  • Religions of the Orient
  • Second Oriental language
  • Arabic literature
  • Arabic linguistics and dialectology

In the first four semesters, students acquire basic knowledge of the Arabic language and a broad base of fundamental knowledge in Oriental Studies Students must take a preliminary examination (“Grundlagen- und Orientierungsprüfung”) by the end of the second semester. This is deemed as having been passed when students have passed the modules Arabic I and II successfully. The second phase of the degree program (3rd to 6th semesters) is characterized by more in-depth study of methodological and language skills. In the context of the Bachelor’s thesis, students are encouraged to start conducting independent scientific work.

  • Curiosity and the desire to learn more about cultural regions that are initially foreign
  • Interest in philological, historical and theological questions
  • Talent for languages
  • Stamina and interest in working intensively with texts

The career fields for graduates of the Oriental Studies degree program listed below are only a selection of potential openings, for example

  • In intercultural fields, where economics, politics and culture meet (tourism, public relations or national/international institutions)
  • In administration, associations and companies, particularly in areas concerned with Europe and the Middle East
  • In development aid, as a business or politics consultant, in security policy, migration and integration
  • As a regional analyst in public institutions, private foundations, companies, banks and international organizations
  • In language teaching and politics education
  • (After further study), in research with a specialization on one aspect of the subject

Possible combinations without overlaps

With these subject combinations, there are generally no overlaps in the timetable.

Possible overlaps in the timetable

If you combine these subjects, individual courses may overlap in your timetable. For this reason, you can only combine the following subjects with your chosen subject after a consultation. Students are responsible for ensuring that the combination can be studied and that the deadlines set out in Section 11 of the ABMStPOPhil are met. When enrolling, proof of a corresponding consultation with the Central Student Advisory Service or the Student Service Center (Faculty of Humanities, Social Studies, and Theology) must be submitted.

Language skills

  • Beginners Students do not require prior knowledge of Arabic or any other language we offer to begin a degree program in Oriental Studies. All our language courses (Modern High Arabic, individual Arabic dialects, Turkish, Hebrew, Persian) start as beginners’ courses. Native speakers Even though our language courses are aimed at beginners, students who are native speakers of Arabic or those who have gained proficiency by other means in Arabic, an Arabic dialect or another language we offer are a welcome addition to our courses in Oriental Studies. If this is the case for you and you are wondering whether you still need to take a beginner’s course, please contact our lecturers. We will advise you on the level at which you can enter a particular language course, or whether participation in a specific  language course can be waived for you if necessary (for example, if you have a university entrance qualification from an Arabic country). From experience, however, we also recommend that you attend at least an advanced Arabic course even in the latter case. The purpose of this is to familiarize you with Arabic-German/German-Arabic translation, with the academic transcription of Arabic, and with the grammatical description of Arabic from a “Western perspective”.
  • German language skills for international applicants: DSH 2 (written 2 / oral 1) or equivalent
