Program overview

What is the degree program about?

Physics provides research-orientated training in highly successful research fields at the Department of Physics in Erlangen. It comprises two semesters of courses and a two-semester research term and is completed with the Master’s thesis. The high-level program further explores and expands on the main topics and skills developed in the Bachelor’s degree program. The degree program consists of advanced modules and projects, a seminar, advanced lab courses, elective modules, and a research term ending with the Master’s thesis.

  • 1st and 2nd semester: orientation phase
    This phase is dedicated to expanding your knowledge in experimental and theoretical physics. In addition, you can choose from a large variety of elective modules both in physics and other areas. You acquire in-depth knowledge in specific physics-related topics. In advanced lab courses you can improve your practical skills.
  • 3rd and 4th semester: research phase
    The third semester starts with an orientation and preparation phase for a specific research task. Now, you can focus on topics you identified as interesting for you in the orientation phase. You can work on specific problems and refer to the research groups at the Department if you require assistance. This phase is completed with the Master’s thesis and a Master’s colloquium where you present your results for discussion.

  • English B2 (vantage/upper intermediate) (CEFR) or an equivalent score on another internationally recognized test.
  • German language skills for international applicants: No DSH, English (level B2, CEFR)

Content related master requirements

To enter the Master’s degree program in Physics, applicants must have completed a Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Materials Physics, or a closely related study program with a final mark of at least “good” (2.5 according to the German grade system). The B.Sc. must have also covered theoretical aspects of Physics or Materials Physics. Additionally, all applicants have to prove adequate proficiency in English. The required English language level is B2 (vantage/upper intermediate) (CEFR) or an equivalent score in another internationally recognized test.
