The History of School Education Collection was established in the mid 1970s by the professor of education Max Liedtke. Today the collection has around 180,000 objects, making it one of the largest of its kind in Germany. It includes almost everything related to the history of school education: exercise books, reports, writing instruments, school furniture, photographs and prints, learning materials, wall posters, and even dummy hand grenades from military sport lessons. Several thousand crib sheets and notes that were passed between pupils can also be found in the collection. The majority of the collection focuses on the history of school education in Middle Franconia over the past 300 years. It is still used for research, teaching and work with schools, as its founder intended.

Artefacts from the collection were used to establish the School Museum in Nuremberg, which has been housed in the Museum for Industrial Culture since 1998 as part of a collaboration between FAU and Nuremberg Municipal Museums. The permanent collection includes a range of interesting objects and is regularly complemented by temporary exhibitions.

The collection of school materials is curated by the School Museum, while the 40,000 school books are curated by the University Library.
