Full Professorship (W3) for Experimental Astroparticle Physics

at the Department of Physics, Erlangen Centre for Astroparticle Physics (ECAP). The professorship is a full-time and permanent position to be filled by the earliest possible starting date.

We seek to appoint a leading expert with an internationally visible research and teaching profile. The position is associated with the research focus Physics and Mathematics of the Cosmos of the Faculty of Sciences at FAU and will be part of the Erlangen Centre for Astroparticle Physics (ECAP), where the key research focus in astroparticle physics is currently on gamma-ray and neutrino astronomy. The successful candidate is expected to strengthen research in the area of neutrino astronomy and neutrino physics or to establish research in a field of experimental astroparticle physics that is not yet represented at ECAP. The new ECAP laboratory building will provide additional excellent infrastructure for experimental work from 2022 onwards. The successful candidate is expected to collaborate with existing working groups in astroparticle physics, astrophysics, astronomy, detector technology, and theoretical physics.

Tenure Track Professorship for Computational Nanomaterials

(W2 / Associate Professor)

at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, Universitätsklinikum Erlangen as part of the High-Tech Agenda Bavaria. The professorship is to be filled by the earliest possible starting date for an initial period of six years. FAU offers a long-term perspective of a permanent appointment to a W2 professorship if the requirements of the tenure evaluation are met.

We seek to appoint an expert who will develop an internationally visible research and teaching profile. The research area includes the development of functional nanoparticles for biomedical applications and in vitro and in vivo testing to improve the diagnosis and treatment of diseases such as cancer and arteriosclerosis using artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms, or self-assembling nanoparticle swarms. These nanoparticles should be able to recognise and eliminate diseased cells, either controlled externally or independently through self-organising networks. In close cooperation with our partner institutions TU Munich, Ansbach University of Applied Sciences and Munich University of Applied Sciences, the professor will develop new models of artificial intelligence and test them in vitro and in vivo. The interdisciplinary nature of this approach requires that the applicant has in-depth knowledge in the fields of biomedicine, imaging, magnetism, synthesis, characterisation and application of nanoparticles.

The applicant should be able to implement newly developed models into in vitro studies and perform animal experiments independently. We welcome applicants who are willing to support clinical research as a Medical Scientist and have experience in using robots, common imaging techniques, and proteins for surface coating of magnetic nanomaterials.

Furthermore, we expect the professor to strengthen and develop existing collaborative networks within the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Sciences, and actively participate in the strategic development of FAU through involvement in national and international collaborative projects and acquiring third-party funding. The successful candidate will be expected to teach in the degree programmes Medicine, Molecular Medicine, Medical Engineering, Medical Process Management and the planned Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programme in Artificial Intelligence. The professor will have a secondary membership in the Faculty of Engineering.

The professorship is to be filled by the earliest possible starting date for a period of five years. The position will be appointed as a W2 or W3 professorship depending on the applicant’s qualifications.

We seek to appoint an expert who will develop an internationally visible research and teaching profile. The successful candidate will represent the field of immunodermatology within the wider context of dermatology and allergology. We expect candidates to have developed an independent research profile and proven expertise in the field of inflammatory and autoimmune skin diseases. The professorship is associated with the position of senior physician in the Department of Dermatology depending on the applicant’s qualifications. The applicant should have in-depth, scientifically visible experience in preclinical or clinical translational research of inflammatory skin diseases and/or autoimmune dermatoses and clinical expertise in the treatment and diagnosis of these diseases. Furthermore, the applicant should have qualified experience in leading a scientific research group and in the acquisition of competitive external funding.

Participation in the research networks at the Faculty of Medicine (Collaborative Research Centres, Research Training Groups, Interdisciplinary Centre for Clinical Research) is expected as well as participation in teaching degree programmes. Candidates will be expected to teach in German and English. We seek to appoint an expert who will develop an internationally visible research and teaching profile. The professorship will develop new optical technologies for the analysis of cells and tissues and advance the experimental and theoretical mastery of light-matter interactions. The research focus is to use optical imaging to better understand medically- relevant processes in inflammatory diseases and cancer and to be able to treat them more effectively in the long term. The tasks of the professorship include establishing and leading a research group at the German Centre for Immunotherapy DZI (new research building ‘Centre for Immunotherapy, Biophysics and Digital Medicine’). The professorship has a secondary membership in the Faculty of Sciences at FAU and will amplify and develop the partnership between the Faculties of Medicine and Sciences at FAU, as well as with the Max Planck Centre for Physics and Medicine.

This research will involve developing tools for the analysis of biophysical cell properties in order to better understand medically relevant processes such as inflammatory or cancerous diseases with the aim of improving therapy in the long term. We expect the professor to represent the field in research and teaching and establish their own working group at the DZI (new research building ‘Centre for Immunotherapy, Biophysics and Digital Medicine’). This research will focus on biophysical, imaging or data analysis methods which provide new insights into the immunological processes causing diseases, with the aim of improving treatment options for diseases. Tenure Track W2 -Professorship for Islamic Religious Studies

(Associate Professor) focusing on discourses of reform in contemporary Islam

at the Department for Islamic Religious Studies (DIRS). The professorship is to be filled by 01.10.2021 on a fixed-term public service contract.

We seek to appoint an expert who will develop an internationally visible research and teaching profile. The successful candidate is expected to represent all aspects of Islamic religious studies adequately in research and teaching, particularly in relevant areas of reform discourses in contemporary Islam with a special focus on Shia Islam. Good knowledge of Arabic and Persian (research languages) is also required. Experience in interdisciplinary collaborative research is desired. Candidates are expected to actively participate in teaching and developing the research profile of the department.

The professorship will be established as part of the Heisenberg programme of the German Research Association (DFG). The establishment of the professorship is dependent on the individual successfully applying to and securing funding for a Heisenberg Professorship from the DFG Heisenberg Programme following the University’s internal appointment procedure. Ideally, candidates should have already secured Heisenberg funding. According to DFG regulations, the W2 position shall be initially limited to three years. A permanent position will be granted after a positive evaluation by DFG and the university three years after the initial appointment. If the position is to be continued after this three-year period, a new appointment procedure is not required.

As well as being responsible for teaching the fundamentals of electrical engineering, the professor will be expected to become involved in the degree programmes offered at the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Communication Engineering and to take an active part in interdisciplinary research within the Faculty of Engineering. Candidates should have an excellent academic track record in one or more of the following research focus areas and have already acquired experience in industry and/or on relevant projects:

  • Electrical design and system optimisation of electrical hydrogen systems
  • Monitoring and diagnosing fuel cells and electrolysers, in particular using sensor-less procedures and machine learning
  • Investigating the impact of operational and environmental factors and contamination on the lifetime of electrolysers and fuel cells
  • Mechatronic system integration of fuel cell stacks

Successful candidates demonstrate excellent academic achievements in research and teaching at the highest international standards. You have substantial research experience abroad and/or international cooperations as well as experience in managing research projects and in raising third-party funding. A university degree and an outstanding doctoral degree as well as a passion for education and pertinent teaching experience are prerequisites. Candidates who are able and willing to teach in both English and German are desired. The position also requires additional postdoctoral qualifications. These should be in the form of a habilitation (postdoctoral thesis) or equivalent academic qualifications. You may also have acquired the necessary qualifications in a non-university context or through a junior faculty position (for example as W1 Professor or Assistant Professor).
