This is a full-time and permanent position planned to be filled by April 1, 2025.
Medizincampus Oberfranken is an innovative collaboration project between FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg, Universitätsklinikum Erlangen, Klinikum Bayreuth GmbH and the University of Bayreuth to set up a program for medical education in Bayreuth based on clinical excellence and successful research under the leadership of the Faculty of Medicine at FAU.
We seek to appoint a leading expert with an internationally visible profile in research and teaching. The successful candidate is expected to represent the field in research, teaching and patient care at Medizincampus Oberfranken. In addition, the candidate is expected to become actively involved in setting up the program for medical education and to participate in research in the field of urology, undertaking interdisciplinary collaboration with colleagues both at Medizincampus Oberfranken and in Erlangen, where FAU has a wide variety of research networks, for instance in clinical and scientific projects at the Comprehensive Cancer Center ER-EMN (www.ccc.uk-erlangen.de).
The professorship to be filled is linked to the position of Head of the Department of Urology and Pediatric Urology at Klinikum Bayreuth.
Successful candidates should have numerous years of clinical experience in a managerial role, as well as an excellent track record in research and teaching at the highest international standards for all aspects of the field of urology. They should have substantial research experience abroad and/or international cooperation as well as experience in managing research projects and in raising third-party funding. A university degree and an outstanding doctoral degree as well as a passion for education and relevant teaching experience are prerequisites. Candidates who are able and willing to teach in both English and German are preferred. The position also requires additional postdoctoral qualifications. These should be in the form of a habilitation (postdoctoral thesis) or equivalent academic qualifications. These qualifications may also have been achieved in a non-university context or through a junior faculty position (for example as Assistant Professor). Candidates must provide evidence of a license to practice medicine as a urologist.
The successful candidate should demonstrate academic leadership, the ability to support early career researchers and to drive FAU’s strategic agenda. at the Department of Medicine 5 – Hematology and Oncology. The position is to be filled by the earliest possible starting date for an initial period of six years and encompasses the following options: an associate (W2) tenure track professorship leading to a permanent W2 professorship or a full (W3) tenure track professorship leading to a permanent full professorship. FAU offers the long-term perspective of a permanent appointment to an associate (W2) or full (W3) professorship if the requirements of the tenure evaluation are met. The decision as to whether the successful candidate is appointed to an associate or a full professorship depends on their qualifications.
We seek to appoint a leading expert with an internationally visible profile in research and teaching in the area of translational CAR T-cell therapy for malignant and inflammatory diseases. The professor will be responsible for research, teaching and patient care in this area, as well as leading the clinical CAR T-cell unit.
We expect the successful candidate to become actively involved in teaching and in the various research collaborations (collaboration research centers, research training groups, Interdisciplinary Center for Clinical Research, leading edge cluster Medical Valley, Graduate School in Advanced Optical Technologies [SAOT]), the priority programs at the Faculty and Universitätsklinikum (e.g. Comprehensive Cancer Center). Degree programs taught at the Faculty of Medicine include Medicine, Dentistry, Molecular Medicine (B.Sc.; M.Sc.), Medical Process Management, Midwifery Science (B.Sc.) and Logopedics, as well as the degree programs Integrated Life Sciences (B.Sc.; M.Sc.) and Integrated Immunology (M.Sc.) offered in collaboration with the Department of Biology. The language of instruction is predominantly German.

The professor will investigate the physical properties of cells (in particular immune cells) and/or tissues that allow them to fulfil their biological functions. The professor is expected to develop and use tools for analysing the biophysical properties of cells in order to gain a better understanding of medically relevant processes such as inflammatory or malignant diseases, and in the hope of being able to treat such diseases more effectively in future. Their tasks will include conducting research and teaching as well as establishing a working group at the Deutsches Zentrum Immuntherapie DZI (in the new research building Center for Immunotherapy, Biophysics and Digital Medicine). The professorship entails secondary membership of the Faculty of Sciences at FAU and should encourage interaction between the Faculties of Medicine and Sciences at FAU as well as with the Max-Planck-Zentrum für Physik und Medizin.

We seek to appoint a leading expert with an internationally visible profile in the physical chemistry of interfaces and materials. The professor will be expected to advance the molecular materials research strategy of the Department of Chemistry and Pharmacy and contribute to key research priorities at FAU, such as New Materials and Processes and Future Energy Systems. We expect the successful candidate to participate in current and future interdisciplinary research initiatives. The professor will also be required to teach in the degree programs of Chemistry, Molecular Science and Chemistry as a minor subject.
