The Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) invites applications for a

Professorship for Cultural and Social Anthropology with a focus on East Asia (W2 / Associate Professor)

at the Institute of Languages and Cultures of the Middle East and East Asia in the Department of Classical World and Asian Cultures. The professorship is to be filled by 01.10.2022 on a fixed-term basis until 30.09.2027.

The professorship is planned as part of the Elite Master’s degree programme ‘Standards of Decision-Making Across Cultures’ (SDAC) which was established in 2017 and has secured funding from the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts within the Elite Network of Bavaria (ENB) until 30 September 2027.

We seek to appoint an expert who will develop an internationally visible research and teaching profile in the field of cultural and social anthropology with a regional focus on East Asia, and culturally sensitive decision-making theories. The professor will also be responsible for managing the interdisciplinary SDAC Elite programme until the completion of its second funding period (September 2027) in collaboration with the two speakers. A particular emphasis of the professorship’s activities is managing the curriculum of the SDAC programme.

Candidates are required to have research and teaching experience in cultural and social anthropology of East Asia as the focus region of the programme as well as good knowledge of the anthropology of decision-making. The professor will also need to be proficient in an East Asian language. Experience in organising the teaching of (ideally interdisciplinary) programmes is an advantage. As the working language of the programme is English, we expect candidates to have teaching experience in English and a record of international publications.

The professorship assumes a leading role in the further development of the SDAC programme as well as in the cooperation with SDAC partners (for example at Peking University). The ability to work closely with the DFG Centre for Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences ‘Alternative Rationalities and Esoteric Practices from a Global Perspective’, which will be established in 2022, is also desirable.

Successful candidates demonstrate excellent academic achievements in research and teaching at the highest international standards. You have substantial research experience abroad and/or international cooperations as well as experience in managing research projects and in raising third-party funding. A university degree and an outstanding doctoral degree as well as a passion for education and pertinent teaching experience are prerequisites. The Faculty of Medicine at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) invites applications for an independent

W2/W3 Professorship for Immunological Bioinformatics

at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Universitätsklinikum Erlangen, as part of the High-Tech Agenda Bavaria and in association with the German Centre for Immunotherapy (DZI). The professorship is to be filled by the earliest possible starting date for a period of five years. The position will be appointed as a W2 or W3 professorship depending on the applicant’s qualifications.

We seek to appoint a leading expert with an internationally visible research and teaching profile and expertise in the analysis of large volumes of clinically relevant data. The professorship will investigate innovative methods for analysing clinical, molecular-biological, and morphological image data in the context of immunological diseases. It would be desirable if these analyses could be used to develop statistically validated prediction models or immunological therapies that can be used in clinical practice. The successful candidate will be expected to develop their own biostatic methods and to participate in consortia within the faculty as well as on a national and international level.

We expect active participation in the various research networks at the Faculty of Medicine (collaborative research centres, research training groups, Interdisciplinary Centre for Clinical Research. The curriculum at the Faculty of Medicine is taught in German and English. The degree programmes taught at the Faculty of Medicine include medicine, dentistry, molecular medicine, medical process management and logopaedics, as well as the interdisciplinary degree programmes in medical engineering and integrated immunology.

The professorship is a permanent position to be filled by 01.01.2022. Medizincampus Oberfranken is an innovative collaborative project involving FAU, Universitätsklinikum Erlangen, Klinikum Bayreuth GmbH and the University of Bayreuth which will offer clinical and research-based training for medical students in Bayreuth coordinated by the Faculty of Medicine at FAU.

We seek to appoint a leading expert with an internationally visible research and teaching profile. The successful candidate is expected to represent the field adequately in research, teaching, and patient care at Medizincampus Oberfranken. The successful candidate is expected to actively participate in the establishment of medical training and research activities in the field of neurosurgery in interdisciplinary cooperation with colleagues at Medizincampus Oberfranken and FAU in Erlangen, with its extensive research networks, including for example in clinical and research projects at the Comprehensive Cancer Center ER-EMN (www.ccc.uk-erlangen.de) .

The new professorship accounts for 2/3 of a full-time position. In addition to teaching and carrying out research at the Faculty of Medicine at FAU, the professor appointed to Medizincampus Oberfranken shall also be appointed Director of the Neurosurgery Clinic at Klinikum Bayreuth, which provides a comprehensive range of services in caring for neurosurgical patients.

We seek to appoint a leading expert with an internationally visible research and teaching profile. The professorship will focus on investigating underlying mechanisms in the interaction between the microbiome and the host in diseases. The successful candidate will have an independent research profile and proven expertise in the area of microbiome research using high-tech methods such as metagenomic analysis. Collaboration with the gnotobiotic unit at the Preclinical Experimental Animal Centre (PETZ) is expected. The Faculty of Medicine at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) invites applications for a

W2 Professorship for Artificial Intelligence in Cancer Care

(Associate Professor)

at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Universitätsklinikum Erlangen in conjunction with the Bavarian Health and Food Safety Authority (LGL). The professorship is a full-time position on the basis of a private-law employment contract to be filled by the earliest possible starting date for an initial period of six years. The position will be based at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Universitätsklinikum Erlangen and incorporates both the professorship itself and the role of Director of the ‘Middle Franconian Regional Centre of the Bavarian Cancer Register’ at the Bavarian Health and Food Safety Authority (LGL). The position has been created as part of the implementation of a clinical cancer register in accordance with Section 65c of the German Social Code V (SGB V) and the Bavarian Cancer Register Act (BayKRegG) by the Free State of Bavaria. The successful candidate will be appointed as Director of the ‘Middle Franconian Regional Centre of the Bavarian Cancer Register’ at the Bavarian Health and Food Safety Authority (LGL) in Erlangen. In close collaboration with the relevant institutions of the Free State of Bavaria, the successful candidate will ensure compliance with all the relevant legal obligations of the cancer register. Leave of absence from the position as university professor shall be granted for performing these duties at the LGL. The duties of Director of the Regional Centre shall be performed under a contract of employment with the LGL according to the wage agreement for the public service sector (TV-L).

We seek to appoint an expert who will develop an internationally visible research and teaching profile. The successful candidate is expected to represent the field of artificial intelligence in cancer care adequately in research and teaching as well as take on the role of Director of the ‘Middle Franconian Regional Centre of the Bavarian Cancer Register’. Experience in the field of clinical data processing and practical experience in oncology is required. Knowledge of tumour documentation systems as well as in-depth knowledge of the following fields is also a prerequisite:

  • Data management in clinical settings, particularly in clinical trials: data acquisition, preparation, cleansing and monitoring
  • Application of AI in a clinical setting
  • Integration of heterogeneous data sets and preparation for (standardised) reports and scientific analyses
  • Programming skills for creating modern, tailor-made software applications
  • Knowledge of data lakes, big data and regional databases
  • Processing genomic datasets.

Experience in collaborating with clinicians of various disciplines on the basis of technical IT applications is highly relevant. The role involves developing interdisciplinary research projects to increase the use of the data of the Middle Franconian clinical cancer register in conjunction with existing institutions at the University and Universitätsklinikum Erlangen in the field of tumours. The professorship shall cooperate closely with the Comprehensive Cancer Center Erlangen-EMN and the scientists and clinicians at the CCC Tumour Register, the Interdisciplinary Study Centre and the Departments of Psychosocial and Palliative Care. Collaboration with established key research priorities such as in the field of oncology and with other institutions in Bavaria in the area of cancer registration is expected. An inclusive personality with strong leadership skills is desired for the role of director.

Degree programmes at the Faculty of Medicine include Medicine, Dentistry, Molecular Medicine, Medical Process Management, Logopaedics, Midwifery Science and, in conjunction with the Department of Biology, Integrated Immunology (M.Sc.). These degree programmes are taught in German and English.
