FAU’s Hightech Campus continues to grow and will now include an additional 105,000 square meters of floor space from the Siemens campus in south Erlangen. The key for the building has now been symbolically handed over to FAU in the presence of Bavarian Minister President Dr. Markus Söder, Siemens CEO Dr. Roland Busch, and State Ministers Markus Blume and Joachim Herrmann.

Siemens announced that it intends to spend half of its two billion euro investment program in Germany. Siemens stated that the investment will establish Erlangen as a center for the technology of the “industrial metaverse”, where this technology supports the connection between the physical and digital world.

FAU made some impressive gains in this year’s QS World University Ranking as it climbed more than 100 places and is now 229th out of 1503 universities. This means FAU is among the top 16 percent of all universities worldwide.

An intelligent suit is hoped to significantly improve rehabilitation after a serious spinal cord injury. The AI-supported solution will be developed over the next three years by researchers from FAU working in collaboration with Heidelberg University and Heidelberg University Hospital. It combines electrical simulation of muscles with support for movement using artificial tendons, and reacts to patients’ intended movements.

FAU is not only one of the most innovative universities in Germany, but also ranks first place in this area in terms of sustainability. This has been confirmed in the latest THE Impact Ranking. In Germany, FAU scores top in the “Good health and well-being” category. In addition, the University is among the top 3 in Germany in the “Affordable and clean energy” and “Sustainable cities and communities” categories.

The German Research Foundation (DFG) is extending funding for a collaborative research center (CRC) or transregio (TRR), for which FAU is a co-applicant. The researchers will receive a further three million euros in funding over the next four years.

The German Informatics Society has chosen the 10 AI newcomers of 2023, and one of them is Nora Gourmelon from FAU’s Chair of Computer Science 5 (Pattern Recognition). She has been recognized for her work in the area of natural and life sciences, in particular due to her innovative and interdisciplinary approach.
