Lehramt an Beruflichen Schulen (M.Sc.)

With a degree in vocational schools, doors are open to you not only at vocational schools, but also at technical and vocational high schools, business schools or vocational colleges. In doing so, you will usually work with young adults who have already completed vocational training or have decided to pursue further education.

During your studies, you will specialize in either technology or business and also choose a teaching subject. What is special about the teaching degree for vocational schools is that it is the only teaching degree program in Bavaria to be completed with a bachelor’s or master’s degree.

Program overview

What is the degree program about?

The teacher training program is the first step on the path to becoming a teacher. It is a scientific course of study that prepares you professionally and theoretically for the various aspects of your later professional life.

In addition to vocational schools, with a degree in vocational schools you can also work at technical and vocational high schools, business schools or vocational schools. During your studies, you will study one of the two specializations of technology or business and also choose a teaching subject.

The special feature of the teaching profession at vocational schools is that this course of study is not completed with the 1st state examination, but initially with the bachelor’s degree. In order to obtain a teaching license for vocational schools, you must then complete a corresponding master’s degree program. This qualifies you for entry into the two-year traineeship, which concludes with the 2nd state examination for the teaching profession at vocational schools.

The following courses of study are available at FAU for a teaching profession at vocational schools:

Business Education
Vocational Education

The teacher training program at vocational schools consists of a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree. Only with the master’s degree can the graduate enter the preparatory service (Referendariat), the completion of which entitles the holder to work as a teacher at a vocational school.

Business Education

Business education as a focus in the bachelor’s program in business studies

In the bachelor’s degree program in economics, students can choose from a total of four concentrations: business administration, economics, business informatics, and business and business education. The emphasis is placed in the third semester.

The Bachelor of Business and Economics with a concentration in Business and Industrial Education can be studied in Study Direction I (major in Business plus Education) or Study Direction II (major in Business plus a second subject plus Education). This decision is also made in the third or fourth semester.

Master’s program

The master’s degree program combines vocational and business education, economics, and social sciences and humanities or natural sciences into an integrative profile. By offering two fields of study, the program enables students to develop their own individual focus. These fields of study open up partly common, but partly divergent fields of activity.

Study direction I focuses on business education and business science content and means studying primarily at the Department of Business and Economics.
In Study Direction II, students can choose a second subject in addition to their major in economics, the study of which (Bachelor and Master together 70 ECTS) leads to a teaching qualification in a second teaching subject. These are business informatics, English, French, Spanish, German, professional language German, special education, mathematics, physical education, ethics and Protestant religious education. Thus, the field of study II combines business education, business studies as well as humanities or natural sciences contents and thus means a simultaneous study at the Faculty of Law and Economics as well as at the Faculty of Philosophy and the Department of Theology or the Faculty of Natural Sciences.

Vocational Education Technology

Bachelor’s degree program

The Bachelor’s program „Vocational Education Technology“ of the Faculty of Technology is composed of modules distributed over six semesters. The primary goal of the Bachelor’s program in Vocational Education Technology is to provide the basis for the Master’s program in Vocational Education Technology. However, the acquisition of basic knowledge and skills in technology and vocational pedagogy also enables students to enter the profession in areas of work such as user consulting and training in the technical field.

Master’s program

The Master’s program „Vocational Education Technology“ lasts two years and concludes with the Master of Education (from WS 22/23 Master of Science). Only with this degree, not with the Bachelor’s degree, can the graduate enter the preparatory service (Referendariat), the completion of which entitles the holder to work as a teacher at a vocational school. The Master’s program is also open to Bachelor’s graduates from other universities and universities of applied sciences.

Both programs are offered in two specializations:
