Vice President People: Prof. Dr. Andreas Hirsch

As Vice President People, Professor Hirsch is mainly responsible for supporting staff members at all career levels (including the Graduate Centre), equality, diversity and internationalisation as well as establishing networks with international universities.

Curriculum vitae

Prof. Dr. Andreas Hirsch was born in 1960 and studied at the University of Tübingen, where he completed his doctoral degree in 1990. From 1990 to 1991, he was a postdoc at the Institute for Polymers and Organic Solids in Santa Barbara, California, in the group led by Professor Wudl. He subsequently returned to the Institute of Organic Chemistry at the University of Tübingen to complete his habilitation. After completing his habilitation in 1994, for which he received a series of prizes and awards, including the Otto Röhm Research Prize (1994) and the ADUC Prize for habilitations (1994), he was appointed professor of organic chemistry at the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Karlsruhe. He has been Chair of Organic Chemistry at FAU since October 1995. He was appointed adjunct professor at Rice University in Houston, Texas in 2004. He was a guest professor at the University of Cyprus in 2006 and at the University of Padua in 2011. He is coordinator of the Graduate School Molecular Science (GSMS), the Interdisciplinary Center for Molecular Materials (ICMM) and collaborative research centre 953 ‘Synthetic Carbon Allotropes’ in Erlangen. He is a member of the board of the former Cluster of Excellence ‘Engineering of Advanced Materials’ (EAM) and the Institute of Advanced Materials and Processes (ZMP). In 2006, he received the Elhuyar Goldschmidt Prize from the Spanish and German Chemical Societies. He was voted professor of the year in 2007 (Unicum, Germany). In 2010, he received an ERC Advanced Grant, and in 2012 he was awarded the Max Grundig Prize and the Medal of the Organic Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences. He was appointed a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and received a second ERC Advanced Grant in 2017. Prof. Hirsch’s list of 665 publications includes 590 research papers, 2 books and 20 patents.

Professor Hirsch was appointed Vice President on 1 February 2022. His term of office ends on 31 March 2024.
