Shanghai Ranking: FAU in the top 50 universities in three subjects

The 2020 Shanghai Ranking has been published, and FAU is among the world’s top 100 universities in five subjects. FAU now has three subjects that are recognised among the top 50 in the world – Metallurgical Engineering (47) now joins Telecommunication Engineering (48) and Energy Science & Engineering (47), both of which also reached the top 50 in 2019. Medical Technology (67) and Chemistry (88) were also listed among the top 100 subjects.

Top marks in national ranking

In 2020, ten subjects at FAU reached the top 10 in Germany, led by Telecommunication Engineering and followed closely by Energy Science & Engineering (2) and Chemical Engineering (3) Materials Science & Engineering and Electrical & Electronic Engineering advanced to fourth place, whilst Metallurgical Engineering and Nanoscience & Nanotechnology took fifth place.

Business Administration (6) and Chemistry and Mechanical Engineering (both 7) also reached the national top 10.

The Shanghai Ranking, officially known as the Academic Ranking of World Universities, has been published on an annual basis by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University since 2003. Universities and a total of 54 individual subjects are assessed on the basis of various indicators during the ranking which focuses on research. Indicators taken into consideration include research publications, citations, Nobel prizes and Fields medals. More than 2,000 universities throughout the world were assessed for the ranking in 2020.
